$1:
Two CF-18s Hornets bombed an extremist fighting position about 250 kilometres southwest of Mosul

They weren't targeting Mosul.

That's funny.. here, 250kms really is considered close.

Hell, we consider Edmonton to be "close" and it's 450kms. ROTFL ROTFL

Perspective....

How's this for perspective... saying 2 places are close in Iraq when they're 250km away is like saying 2 places are close in Canada when they're 2500km away.

If a none Canadian asks me where I'm from, I say Calgary, only because Calgary is closer than Edmonton, but it's still 110 kms away.

To the average person who is often ignorant of geography (and politics, current events and many other things), it's just easier to say that than a target in the middle of nowhere.

So you're saying that reporters are often ignorant of geography, politics, current events and many other things...

Yup, that sounds about right.

Fixed that for you:
$1:
James Bezan, Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Defence, told the House of Commons on Thursday that CF-18s struck their target Wednesday. “Our CF-18s dropped one 500-pound bomb on an ISIL [Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant] vehicle checkpoint about 250 kilometres to the southwest of Mosul,” Mr. Bezan said.
Where do you think he got the info from? It's not like reporters are in spotter planes or ground positions to verify where the bombs are dropping for themselves.
