"... sensationally reported in the Courier-Mail, owned by Rupert Murdoch’s NewsCorp."

Shocker.

All the explanation you need right there.

'Shemale' used to be an acceptable term and it appears as such in my 1986 Associated Press Style Guide. No doubt 'transgender' will someday be considered 'offensive' and it will be replaced by yet another term that the PC police can hit people over the head with.

Really? I'm not Jewish. So I can't say "that person is a jew?" I can, I presum say "that person is a Christian" even tho I'm not one of those either. shows how ridiculous things like this can become. What term am I supposed to use to describe a person of that ethnoreligious group? Or is it impolite just to mention it at all?

Gay, same thing. I thought this was the term du jour and was the correct one, at least until queer is fully rehabilitated. gay /= fag, afaik.

Public_Domain Public_Domain:
Not about whether you aren't or are one thing or another. If you aren't of that group, I'm going to wildly assume that in general you will not be using the term in a positive sense. Maybe, but most likely not, which is why these terms are now taboo to use, especially if you aren't from the group they apply to.

I used the word "and" specifically to avoid whatever confusion you're having here andy. If you aren't gay, but you are taking it upon yourself to tell others you beleive they're gay, then my previous post applies to the scenareo. People arent doing that with "Christian" or "Canadian" or "Caucasian".

You are nuts. See prejudice where there is none. They are descriptive words that have their place just as any other descriptor. So apparently now I'm not allowed to mention somebody is Jewish or gay because I'm neither. Can we at least establish then that the gay guy can't call me straight and the Jew, well, i don't know what term would be analogous there that fits, but there's gotta be one, doesn't there? I'm not a woman, can I now not say "that woman?" Nuuuuuts

Just read your last post. to equate jap and jew is probably just based on your ignorance, or is nuts again. Jap is insulting, Japanese is not. Jew is not inherently insulting unless accompanied by an insult.

Public_Domain Public_Domain:
For "jew", I would say that, like the words "gay" and "fag", 95%+ of the times I've heard the words used in public conversation the speaker was not part of the group and they were using the terms derogatorally.

Kike is derogatory....Jew, no.... it's completely acceptable in every day conversations about someone's cultural or religious background, unless you are saying something like you dirty Jew or 'Are you trying to jew me?' when you suspect someone is trying to rip you off.

oh, and the word is derogatorily

When the wife behaves in a tight fisted manner or stereotypical fashion, I usually call her Sarah or Rebecca. I usually get a generic 'asshole'.

I think you've combined terms that are inherently pejorative with ones that are definitely not. Kinda scary. As for terms used on this board, Shep favors wog, he's not trying to be pc, he knows its offensive. Lots of people use this board to let their hate out, but don't let that influence you where perfectly acceptable words become tainted when used in a neutral way in some strange twist. I assume you're non-Jewish and straight. Do you really avoid those words in everyday discourse if the occasion arises?
