I think 7.62 and 5.45 rounds and spare AK parts are much easier to access over there than 5.56 rounds and M-16 parts. They're better off using what they've got... for now.

The same sort of thing happened in the States with all sorts of rich kids during the Vietnam war. It was the same sort of dodge that kept George W. Bush out of Vietnam.
