Meanwhile, the RCMP say if they can track down the person who was flying drone near YVR Monday, they will consider laying charges.
The RCMP shouldn't just consider laying charges they should damn well charge the person(s) involved. Hundreds of lives could be endangered by idiots like this.

Under Canadian rules, if a drone is under 35 kilograms, operators are only required to maintain a line of sight and avoid getting too close to congested areas or restricted airspace like an airport.

Well someone sure must have changed the rules since I was a kid. Back then it was absolutely verboten to launch a model rocket or fly a model plane anywhere near an airport, line of sight or not.

Still is, just people are too ignorant of the basic rules. I think in previous decades, most people joined clubs because technology was expensive and there wasn't a pervasive common knowledge on the internet like there is today. And when a member of these clubs, the rules were usually spelled out quite clearly and built up a level of responsibility.

Now people order these drones, mostly online, and build them in their garage with little thought to the consequences. I have lots of RC stuff, drones, planes, helos, High Power Rockets and I know the rules when using them.

I don't need these idiots to a, not only the potential for endengering the lives of people but b, governments panic and start banning shit.

Why don't people use their brains.

The RCMP will need to determine the intent of the drone controller.

If it's a 25 year old fellow from Syria who just returned to Canada from doing volunteer work with ISIS then the RCMP will obviously find that this was just harmless fun.

But if it's some 13 year old Canadian kid then they're going to make an example of him.
