$1:
Davison said the rationale offered by the school was that the shorts could distract boys and staff.

That sounds very ... islamic ...

The big difference being, one is what you wear to the beach and then there is school/office appropriate dress.

The same mom likely thinks it's ok to let her kid go to school in yoga pants or pajama bottoms and a tube top

It's a bit short. The fingerlength policy is what I always grew up with, and I don't think it's changed. I can tell that should be another inch or two longer considering her fingers are curled.

I would be pissed off too if the shorts that girl is wearing were considered 'too short'.
Guys are being distracted by girls anyway, whether they were short(er) shorts or a burlap sack.

That they even bring up that 'staff would be distracted' is simply gross. If your staff is being distracted by that, or ANY student, you might want to check your staff, not your students.

$1:
Debbie Buott-Matheson, a spokeswoman for the Chignecto-Central Regional School Board, said the issue was not about one gender being distracted by another.

"They do use as a general guideline — you hang your hands down at your sides when you're standing up and if the shorts come down to the end of your fingertips, that's a pretty reasonable length," she said.

"That can be different depending on the student. Some students are taller, some students are shorter, arms are longer, arms are shorter. It is a judgment call for administrators."

It seems there is a policy in effect, which according to the photo, she is not in compliance with, therefore, like it or not, according to the school her shorts are too short.

Maybe if she stood up straight, with her shoulders back, which she is not, she would be in compliance.

My shorts could be at least 4 cms shorter than hers and they would have no problem according to their guidelines, because of the length of my arms and the fact that I stand up straight...

And if she uncurled her fingers, again she wouldn't be in compliance. :)

I think they should just follow the friggin rules that were set forth and get on with their lives. If this is the biggest dilemma in someone's day, they should count their blessings instead of bitching about useless nonsense. Too many people with WAY too much time on their hands.

So you have no problem with the statement that 'staff might be distracted'?
What about skinny jeans then? Yoga pants? Tank-tops? Make-up? Piercings? Tattoos?

This is too short??

I refuse. The reason why this is, is because the ADULT STAFF cannot keep their eyes off the YOUNG, MINOR kids. THAT is what bothers me.

JUDGMENT CALL.
I wouldn't accept it either. HUGE story, here.
