'So did she deserve to get hit?'

Amazing. I didn't think anyone could stoop that low in this day and age.

I'm not one to defend any type of abuse. I'm also not one to defend bad cops as you can see from past comments. But I also don't condemn people for private jokes.

If you've ever worked in any job with horrific incidents happening daily (hospital, cop, paramedic) you start poking fun with fellow co-workers just to keep your sanity. These guys deserve a break.

I suppose if you're not smart enough to hang up a phone then I guess we shouldn't be surprised with whatever comes from his mouth.

I worked a few years at a funeral home when I was in my teens. Some of the jokes would be considered in really poor taste to those not working in that field but damn, some of them were funny as hell.

I married a Registered Nurse. The kindest person you'd ever meet. She'd die for a stranger. But get those nurses together and the stuff that comes out of their mouths seems horrific. It's a coping mechanism. If they, or funeral directors etc acted appropriately to that situation every minute of every day they'd be eating bullets. Joking makes them sane.

I agree.

But if you've been heard by the person at the butt of your cruel joke, I seriously have no sympathy for you. You should expect a harsh reaction. Expecting amnesty for this isn't a viable option; there are consequences and one should accept them.

Sucks that they got heard. Sucks they completely failed to help a real victim. Why should I sympathize, when they've made a situation worse for another human being, even if it was unintentional? She shouldn't just get to be collateral damage.

I'm not against making jokes for sanity. Even in non-stressful situations we use it to stay sane. But I'm not against a person being straight-up personally offended at an insulting joke on their deeply personal matters if they overheard you.

They should get a smack up side the head at the very least, and learn how to use their devices properly.

Yeah, that's about it. If you're going to take the risk wiht the gallows humour, then you've only yourself to blame if it gets out.

In a job where public perception matters a great deal, this is a definitely a big screw up. Especially now that it's national news.
