I agree.
But if you've been heard by the person at the butt of your cruel joke, I seriously have no sympathy for you. You should expect a harsh reaction. Expecting amnesty for this isn't a viable option; there are consequences and one should accept them.
Sucks that they got heard. Sucks they completely failed to help a real victim. Why should I sympathize, when they've made a situation worse for another human being, even if it was unintentional? She shouldn't just get to be collateral damage.
I'm not against making jokes for sanity. Even in non-stressful situations we use it to stay sane. But I'm not against a person being straight-up personally offended at an insulting joke on their deeply personal matters if they overheard you.
They should get a smack up side the head at the very least, and learn how to use their devices properly.
Yeah, that's about it. If you're going to take the risk wiht the gallows humour, then you've only yourself to blame if it gets out.
