There's another story where the US's power consumption has fallen for the last 3 years in a row. And this is why. Get rid of the inefficient heaters, and use real lights!

What a load of rubbish! This is some sort of finagle designed by the bulb manufacturers to separate us from a lot more of our brass.

in a cold climate are they really that energy inefficient, seeing as they heat the room too?

Yup. Thermodynamics, not just a good idea, it's the Law! Energy that could be light is instead transmitted as heat. Inefficient. Notice that the really efficient quartz heaters emit no light? :) A good light should emit no heat.

I've bought enough light bulbs to last the rest of my life. There's nothing like a regular light bulb for reading a good book.

I've been using CFLs for 20 years, and LEDs for 10. If it weren't for the fridge and stove, I wouldn't have any incandescent bulbs.

Edit - and I still am using the first one I bought, 20 years ago!

I don't like the "flicker" of fluorescents and I certainly don't like the colour temperature. I don't have any choice though, as the Ministry of Light Bulbs Commissar has decided which type I can use for me.

but by doing both, giving off heat and light, are they really saving us any money, or are the savings so infinitesimal as to be nil? Extra heat sources are appreciated right now

If I remember my thermodymanics, it would be more efficient to use a good LED for light and a good Quartz or gas heater for heat. You could use less power in each, and get better results that one bulb.

But if it's all you have . . it's better than nothing. I recall my computer gives off a fair bit of heat too. Not so much light. ;)

Test that theory. Turn off your furnace and cook your roast supper with the oven door open. :P

My wife has already mentioned making bulb runs to Buffalo.

Me? I'd rather buy cheap booze.
