Yeah that's not going to happen. Russia would sue the crap out of the IOC and probably bankrupt it. If all the participating nations weren't willing to boycott the games in China, where general human rights aren't observed, there's no way Russia is going to be boycotted.

It's a nice idea but utterly unrealistic. First there's not enough to plan everything for a Vancouver Olympic again. Not is there the will to spend the money again. Thirdly, Russia will have a massive crap attack as their bribe money to the IOC will have gone to waste.

Ideally, participating countries' athletes would protest themselves. What would Russia do is the entire UK contingent wore rainbow armband st the opening ceremonies? Or the US team? Or Canada's? They going to arrest them all and spark the mother of all diplomatic shitstorms?

Who the hell cares anymore? The Olympics USED to be about showcasing amateur talent.
If I want to watch pros play, I can do that every friggin' weekend of the year and several days of the week as well without all of the "rah rah" jingoistic bullshit.

Silly posturing is all this is.

It also illustrates exactly how intolerant are the supposed 'tolerant' types.

So people are supposed to just let this slide?

It's too late to move the games now. If this was going to be such a concern then why was it not proposed earlier?

I guess we'll have to see if Russia is serious about enforcing this law to the visiting athletes. If they do start arresting people then it could get nasty. The IOC needs to address this.

Russia just recently passed this law, that's why.

Ah... I did not realize that. Thanks.

Strange that in a time where other countries have become more accepting that Russia would go in the other direction. :?:

They may not be able to move the games, but if this story gets enough traction, individual nations and/or individual athletes may boycott. Then again, Russian civil/human rights violations pale in comparison to China's and everyone happily paraded to Shanghai 5 years ago.
