The Americans have been very carful to bring home each and every one of their fallen around the world, whenever possible. Something very similar happened to a family member of my wife, who went down in Holland in a Wellington and was not found until decades later. We found him buried in a Commonwealth cemetery in Germany, where he was re-located to, while doing an internet search on his name. The family was never notified, apparently. I guess that the trail was too cold.
