Yep, Harpo and his tighty-righties have a real hard-on for gagging and muzzling scientists and anyone else directly or indirectly connected to government. Part of this is ideological (e.g. climate change), part is economic (e.g. oilsands, fisheries, anything that makes a profit) and part is just paranoia that if they don't contol and manage every syllable of every communication, the Liberals will take the country back. Can't really call it a.'hidden agenda' though, they've been doing this openly since they came to office.

You can keep the "Harpo and his tighty-righties" part, but from the limited information in that article, it seems like a bad move to me too.

More an issue with our news media being little better than school yard gossips than some drive to muzzle scientists.
If we had a reasonable and responsible media a government could let it's employees make statements without getting the go ahead from the ministry first.

You sound like Kim-Jong Il.
Also, note that its not "Ministry" approval, which has been fairly standard practise (actually the term for federal entities is usually 'Department', Ministry is a provincial term but I digress), but PMO approval, meaning even routine public communications from any department.in the land have to be approved by the Prime Ministers Office itself.

I have to conclude that if you're considerably LEFT, then the Conservatives look considerably RIGHT. "Right wing" takes on a whole new meaning when you go outside of Canada.

This issue of restricting climate and other environmental data isn't exclusive to Harper.
In America, they're suing the EPA right now, because it refuses to honor a FOIA request trying to get into a fake email account of former EPA head Lisa Jackson.
In Britain, they was a big conflict when HadCru, I think it was, refused to release climate data on the grounds it was owned by different countries as well as Britain.
The IPCC is pissed right now, because somebody leaked the science of the upcoming report before the policy makers had a chance to arrange it in media release speak for the public.
This sort of thing has been happening for some time, but if this is a left versus right thing now, it's worth noting that originally the censors were more left leaning.
Personally I think if the public is paying out the doe the data should be public no matter who's controlling it.
