It's a worldwide problem. I was just watching an episode of Mayday recently that dealt with a crash that was caused by flimsy fake parts. As much as the authorities are working to get rid of the problem, it will never be completely wiped out.

While it looks like we are in the same boat as everyone else who purchased the 130's, it may have been the manufacturer who passed along that information to the customers. Then again it could be political stupidity.

Maybe because they didn't want to advertise to the world that their military aircraft have faulty parts

In fairness, it might not be that they lied about this.

I guess it all depends on how much the government relied on info from Lockheed and how much digging they did on their own. If, in fact, they did know about it and lie about it, then it's a massive failure of this government.

If, on the other hand, they foolishly just relied on info from Lockheed, then it's nothing more than a lack of due diligence (and maybe a little incompetence) on their part.

However, given their past history (like with the F-35), you could very well be correct. We'll have to wait and see what comes out in the wash...

I put the blame totally on Lockheed. They at the very least be aware of their own parts and where they go. There is no excuse. These are multi-million dollar warplanes for cripes sake.

How about the fact we've known for months but have not done anything about?

On a lighter side I can just see two engineers having a chat about how they can figure out which parts are the fakes:

Interesting that they wanted to blow about $40 billion on the F35, saying "our troops deserve the best" and not holding Lockheed-Martin to any sort of fiscal accountability, but going cheap and buying parts from China for other things is somehow A-OK. What kind of sewer is it at DOD when it comes to procurement? No matter who's in charge of the government what the military keeps doing when it comes to purchases seems to get worse and worse every year.

You make light of it, but this is an example of how people will die needlessly.

Integrated Circuits have specific operating requirments. To build one to "Military Specifications", it must operate over a larger heat range than a retail version.

As the chip is used, it heats up. As it heats, it expands. If the expansion isn't compensated for in the materials used in the substrate, the silicon the chip is made on will shatter.

So, shaving off the case markings and marking it as 'mil spec' will result in failures, and if it's a non-redundant or critical system, you'll see failures that may cause deaths. Not too funny, even for someone with my sense of humour.
