WTF is this shit? Cancel Christian Chaplain services too if Freedom of Religion and Cost is important. Religious Institutions get Tax Breaks already, they should provide these services on their own dime for that reason alone.

Since prison inmates form a very small percentage of the population (inmates of religions other than Christianity an even smaller percentage), this action will likely have little in the way of repercussions.

Frankly the government should leave preaching to the officials from the church, mosque, synagogue... whatever.

Spend taxpayer dollars on ventures more worthwhile.

Non-Christian prison chaplain cuts defended

The federal government is defending its decision to cancel the contracts of all its part-time non-Christian prison chaplains, saying it plans to use the same multi-faith model already used in the Canadian Forces.

The cancellations, which will take effect by the end of March 2013, will remove all the part-time chaplains in the federal prison system, leaving about 80 full-time chaplains across the country — all but one are Christian.

On Friday the government issued a statement clarifying the number of contracts affected. The statement says a total of 49 part-time contracts were cancelled, including 18 non-Christian and 31 Christian chaplains.

In question period in the House of Commons on Friday, Conservative MP Candice Bergen, the parliamentary secretary to the minister of public safety, said the remaining full-time chaplains would provide ecumenical multi-faith counselling to all inmates.

This is just stupid.

Even the hardcore religious types that I know, think this is stupid.

I think it is time for Canada (all levels of government) to enact a complete break from religions. I honestly don't think that the voting ramifications would be all that severe.

Kind of like when Alberta was forced to allow same sex marriages...there was a collective shrug of shoulders (except for a very small minority of ass hats) and everybody moved on...even though we were touted as the most staunch anti-homosexuality province.
