I prefer of thinking of him as cowardly, he was probably hoping to be a martyr but when that didn't pan out he turned chicken.

Yes and no. In Canada we still have to follow the Charter of Rights and Freedoms during Court Martial proceedings, and I would presume the US Army has to allow "rights" of the accused. Better to take your time, get all your ducks in a row and leave no avenue for appeal because his "rights" were not upheld.
