Actually our breadbasket looked like it was doing well on the map. Once again, we can feel smug.

The best way to boost food production is to have high food prices. This is just a result of the weather, not of some kind of meddling by an OPEC-like agriculture cartel. Prices will come back down.

It would hurt to stop wasting food to make fuel as well.

It wouldn't hurt our engines either, Ethanol blended gas is a shitty fuel.

End agricultural subsidies to massive, multinational corporations and that can help bring food prices down, too. You can't tell me it's a good thing that most of the food production in North America is effectively controlled by less than a dozen corporations.

End subsidies to all agricultural industry, big or small.

A larger company is normaly better albe to diversify the risks they face, better able to make capital investments to incress efficency.

So long a the sub dozen coroprations are in each others markets to some degree you have in theory at least the setup for competition. Although it is possible for them to end up as a cartel.

Both the US and the EU need to drop the agricultural subsidies.

It's a good idea in theory, but if we're going to subsidize any industry, I want it to be agriculture. Food is kind of important.

The subsidies don't keep prices down, or farmers working.

In fact many times the opposite is true.

The fellow who's renting our land currently has most of it and his land, that's not hay, sown to fava/faba beans and lentils right now. I think he also has a couple hundred acres sowed with kabuli chick peas still. he had more of the land dedicated to it a couple of years ago, but it's a bit of a bitch to grow.
