Sure.

http://www.ctv.ca/CTVNews/Politics/20110910/dechert-flirty-emails-china-110910/

$1:
A parliamentary secretary to a cabinet minister was told to give an accounting of what he said to a journalist with China's official news agency who got flirtatious emails from him, a government source said Saturday.

Looks like even the Reformacons are not just shrugging this off. As the story says, Dechert had no secret info to give, so this is probably nothing. But it looks bad. He should be demoted, he obviously has poor judgement.

And
$1:
A memo by the head of the Canadian Security Intelligence Service that was made public this year warned of the threat of foreign interference from countries out to influence policy and politicians.

Canadians singled out by unfriendly powers may be "subject to threats, coercion or potential blackmail," warned the memo from CSIS director Dick Fadden to Public Safety Minister Vic Toews.

Fadden cited Canada's natural resources, scientific and technological sectors and its influence in the international community as reasons for it being a target of foreign influence.'

In a media interview in 2010, Fadden was cagey about the countries involved, but did not deny that China was a country of concern.
So McGuyver may not be as paranoid as was suggested here.

A time out may be in order, though again, emails to a Chinese reporter are a long way from selling state secrets.

However, it is fun to pillory here.

Well, no, actually. Being a horndog is no big deal. Doing it with people who work for the Chinese govt is a whole different thing. It shows very poor judgement, and he should be booted from his position. If you're just an MP, flirt with anybody you want. If you're a member of cabinet, not so much.

He should be demoted to work at Tim Hortons and be paid a minimum of $10.25 an hour to prevent him from a life of poverty.

I get the feeling that you think my flaming post was directed towards you - it was not. It was directed towards the flamer that responded to mine.

Fair enough, but name calling is so Grade 4, I just thought that someone with 10,000 and more posts would be more skilled at the art of rhetoric no matter who he is flaming at.

Play judge, jury, and forum cop elsewhere.

Oh i see another lefty has shown up on the boards and Gunny's taken it upon himself to rid the boards of this pox.

Hardly.

For a guy who has no issue targeting the righties that sashay in, you certainly take no end of umbrage when some far leftie drops provocative little gems for public consumption.

Review your own posting history before lecturing others, Zip. You might be surprised at the degree of hypocrisy you're exhibiting.

Not only target the righties that sashay in, but go after the righties that have been here for a considerable amount of time.

I had a few thoughts on this still.

1) What is you ran your own business, or were the CEO of a corporation and one of your VP’s was spending an abnormal amount of time with someone inside a competing corporation. Does common sense dictate that in the interests of the shareholders and your own ass that you should remove that person from access to privileged information, corporate secrets and so forth? I’m pretty sure 99 times out of 100 a smart CEO does something about possible breaches of the company’s best interests.

2) Humour me and pretend that the worst has happened, this married man had sexual relations with the Chinese reporter (spy). Now he has been compromised and they have him by the balls, and to prove they are serious about blackmailing him they have already embarrassed him with the emails. Revelations of the sexual relationship will ruin his marriage, ruin his career and destroy his family. Yet he is still working in his former job with access to information that is sensitive (foreign affairs = maybe he knows when our PM is going to pop in on the troops in Afghanistan). Don't you think there is the smallest possibility that this top member of our government is compromised and that the security of our country trumps his assertions that “nothing happened”?

You can tell yourself that “nothing happened” but you can’t be sure, can you? Are you willing to put your head on the chopping block on the good word of Bob Dechert? What kind of damage can a compromised MP do to a country? Even if the risk is only 1%, is it worth it when firing and replacing him really causes no issues at all?

Prepare for the worst and hope for the best, isn’t that how the saying goes. In my opinion, I don't think keeping this guy around serves any purpose other than to save his face. The conservatives would be much better off without him. Throw him under the bus and move on.

You want to fire your "VP" over "what if's"?
Innocent until proven guilty doesn't apply here, I guess?

Smart CEO's and companies do care, that's why these issues are handled right from the beginning.

The majority of organizations have senior management and executives sign non disclosure agreements and have various other non-compete clauses in their contracts.

With that said, for a VP or any senior management to take such a risk would put his career and the future of his family in serious jeopardy.
