andyt andyt: Keith Martin - thumbs up. Seems to have some convictions tho, so no chance in hell of becoming leader. That's way too many times we are agreeing andy........I still haven't mailed that cash to you. Wouldn't it be nice if the guys who have convictions, points of view and experience were in charge? Instead we get Harper, Iggy, Jack and Duceppe. How come the idiots are in charge?

hurley_108 hurley_108: Because I can say that there are two in the Conservative caucus that just might swing me there: Clement and Prentice. I think that either one of them could very well provide the kind of strong, rational leadership that none of the current leaders does. Clement is a total douchebag. He's a Mike Harris clone, Randian idealogue. He's just like Harper: an ultra-right, condescending Alliance/Reform-type that infiltrated the CPC while traditional conservatives slept. If I can think of one CPC MP that could be more dangerous than Harper, it's Clement. "Rational" is not a word that comes to mind when describing Clement.

Don't worry, I'll find some negative cop story and we can get back to our comfort zones.

I just see Ned Flanders.

To be honest, I give kudos to Harris for at least telling us things were gonna be tough and big cuts were coming AS his election platform instead of blowing a bunch of smoke up our collective asses a la McGuinty or Rae.

When you come to power on a platform of cutting waste and then, instead of cutting waste, you cut education and healthcare, that's not worthy of kudos. And Harris never really cut spending. He cut provincial spending by downloading it on the municipalities. So provincial taxes went down a couple of bucks, but municipal taxes went up a couple of hundred. And all the while, healthcare and education burned. Fuck Mike Harris.

It's easy to balance a budget if you get someone else to pay for it.

Well. I guess Clement isn't so popular to those in his home province. I heard that he was the one puching for more consumer rights in the recent copyright bill, and I got the sense that he was being told what to do and say on teh long form census, but maybe my read was off....

Well...it's not as bad as Rae. He'll likely never recover from his premiership here. It's simple electoral math - he's got to win seats in Ontario to be a contender, and any Liberal strategist with his/her worth knows that.

DerbyX DerbyX: Addenum. A perfect example of this is the military. Sure lots of you guys have criticized specific moves (or lack thereof) Harper has made but this is only part of the story.
The criticism have gone from "those rotten military hating bastard Liberals" to "Harper sure made a mistake here." or "the government isn't doing right by the military".
A very telling difference. Any of the budget cutbacks or equipment purchase delays or just about anything deemed negative towards the CF was reacted to very differently depending on who was in charge.
In fact even when Harper announces things like mothballing the JSS purchase some people on here still managed to blame the Liberals for "allowing it to happen". I have to agree with you there Derby. I have stated before that NO government has been truly good to the CF. They use it for sound bites and to get ppl inspired then, nothing happens.
