This was funny, and no, I did not get any vibes of Germany 1935. If this is what you think Germany 1935 was, get another history book.

The general way in which popular media, like SNL, thinks it's okay to ridicule people on the basis of their name/language/culture is breeding the same sort of "us versus them" mentality that grew against Jews in Germany in the 30s. EyeBrock noted how Muslims are becoming more segregated and fundamentalist in Britain. Why is that? Maybe it's because of the racist ridicule that's growing against them. It seems a logical thing, to me, that they're becoming more withdrawn to insulate themselves against a tidal wave of racism, tacit or other. It's a mob mentality.

Of course it's not the same thing as Nazi Germany...not yet. But who knows how Muslims will be ridiculed in North America 5 or 10 years from now. That SNL bit was upsetting to me because it seems like the start of a slippery slope. Toady we point fingers and laugh at their names. Tomorrow? Who Knows?

Yes, I've been to the UK many times. Both my parents were born there. The racist ridicule I was talking of was the De Niro bit. I was questioning whether there is similar treatment in Britain which would cause them to close their ranks.

If anyone's going off half-cocked here, it's you. All I said was that the DeNiro bit was out of line and indicative of a pretty widespread hatred of Islam post-911. If they don't like life in the UK (or anywhere else) then I agree, they should leave. If I were a Muslim, I'd be running for cover.
