I don't think it will be do to the fact their bodies were about a kilometer inland from the boat. Or did I misunderstand where the bodies were found?

I think they said 1km from the boat - but they did say in a thick wooded area. Not the bank of the river. So they didn't drown, even though locals said the river will kill you if you try to swim it.
