Sure. But when immigrants say we should make Punjabi and Mandarin official languages, or there's serious discussion about bringing Sharia law to Canada, I don't go for that.

Course not. There are fringe idiots coming up with dumb ideas all of the time. Immigrant groups hardly have a monopoly there.

It's funny, but immigrants take a lot of heat for supposedly undermining Canadian values. And yet if you look at what some people identify as culprits for changing the social face of Canada - glorifying sex and violence, undermining the role of the nuclear family, double career parents with kids in daycare, for example, I'm willing to bet that that falls more on the non immigrant Canadians here.

Too many new 'Canadians' don't give a fuck about what happened in Canada and to Canadians before they landed at the airport.

Or fell out of the womb.

Lots of young Canadians, born and raised in Canada, could care less about Remembrance Day.

They are too far removed from the incident to relate or care about it.

EB is spot on as usual.

The Brits are doing something though. Apparently, the government has called
up all the schools, and they are 'forcing' the kids to take the field
trips over to France and Belgium to go to the memorials and such.

'Big Push' for 2014 and all that.

Places are now full of British kids on buses.

Couple days, not sitting around for an hour.
And we argue about an hour, once a year.

The sad part is that because of political correctness we are slowly relegating the sacrifice these men and women made to the scrapheap of history.

But I suppose General Mcknezie is right, everyone has a right to believe what they want and do what they want especially since this appears to have become the mantra of todays society. It's a good thing the Veterans didn't ascribe to this philosophy though or we'd likely be discussing this in German.

An excellent point.

Rememberance Day is about the most important reason that Canada is THE CANADA that the immigrants 'supposedly' CHOSE to leave their countries of birth, and come here for. Yet, so often, they come here, and the first order is to grab onto all the freebies that we so generously offer to them, all the while denying our Veterans, and then they- many immigrant groups-proceed to point the barrel of human rights, and freedoms at us in order to change the 'Canadian way' to 'whatever way' they were supposedly escaping!

You hit the nail on the head. This is all another example of our way getting changed to suit a few. It's gone way too far, yet again.

Call bullshit all you want, it's happening all around you.

Did second generation Canadians stand up and demand we stop having Christmas concerts?

Did second generation Canadians claim they were offended by Halloween/Easter?

Are second generation Canadians asking governments to fund all sorts of religious schools?

Our Canadian culture is a set of moving goal posts. We change with the wind and any request to accommodate another newcomer to Canada.

Canada was built on a specific set of values and traditions that we continually erode in the name of accommodation. That said, it's those values and traditions that made this Country a destination for those looking for a better life.

R=UP

Exactly. And every time we give in to those ridiculous requests, another small piece of our values and traditions is forever lost.

When will we all put a stop to this? When?

I've had a somewhat unique experience having grown up and gone to school in Canada, where I remember the National Anthem being played and I think the Lords Prayer as well until all religion was banned. We still had assemblies for Remembrance Day. And now having experienced school in Northern Ireland both as a student for a couple of years and now with my own children in school, and the fact that religion is still a part of every day in schools here (which I don't mind personally) but the policies on Remembrance Day vary. The biggest divide here is that because Remembrance Day is associated with the British Army here, most Catholics won't take part in any way. This is absurd of course as Irish Catholics served in both World Wars and are still serving in the British Army today. In schools I think it should be opt out as it always has been rather than opt in.

I will be in my dress uniform on Sunday at our basis Remembrance service and my wife and kids will be there too. It's just a shame we can't march to any of the local Cenotaphs here like we do on mainland UK.

actually it's older white liberals who are looking for reasons why a recent arrival might take offense because really, in the end, their so called 'tolerance' is just not so carefully masked paternalism.

Steady now, this is an immigrant beating thread not the identification of actual culprits thread.

Interesting factoid...

Few years back, when prayers were conducted during a parade, all those fallen in removed their headdress and bowed during prayers.

Then one day someone protested this fine and very old military tradition. It went through all of the stages of review and finally, some big head in Ottawa decreed that a member of the CF no longer had to remove his headdress and bow during prayers.

Was it a Jew?

Was it a Sikh?

Was it a Muslim or any other immigrant?

Nope, one Lieutenant (N)Darryl Scott. Born and bred.

2 minutes of silence, where those who are religious can pray silently or if they are not, they can be introspective

No, I'll call bullshit here. The irony of an atheist complaining about the goal posts of Canadian culture changing is delicious because I suspect you'd be wailing and gnashing your teeth if the Lord's prayer were reintroduced.

Call bullshit all you want, you're dead wrong.

In actual fact, I'm all for keeping with the religious traditions of this Country, despite my personal feelings on religion. I was upset when they started naming the Christmas Concert "Holiday Concert" and even more pissed when they threatened to cancel Halloween.

Yea, we'll see how warm and fuzzy you are when groups of people start protesting Remembrance Day ceremonies here in Canada....burning Poppies chanting for soldiers to "rot in Hell".

you really don't qualify as an immigrant, so you're not allowed to play that pity card. You're like EB and Pluggy..... you're a delayed pioneer. Most 'immigrants' would see you as just another whitey round eye.
