The Liberals of the time hated the concept of identity, and certainly wanted to do away with it at any level or any facet of society
This is an unfair sentiment. Actually, they were not in favour of
British identity and wanted to instead build a brand of Canadian identity. A new Canadian flag had been introduced in '65 and the rebranding of the military, agree with it or not, was a continuation of that endeavor.
Fair enough.
Then it was grossly incompetent policy move. To rename the RCN Maritime Command - a sterile, institutional moniker that inspired nothing but resignations and turned it's back on the previous 48 years of tradition (which claims much of its tradtions from the sveral hundred year old institution of the RN) and the accomplishments during two wars.
It was a wrong that has now been remedied.
