Your partisan blinkers won't let you see what's going on curtman.
The Tories thought so much about the bills then that they were willing to let them die on prorogue.
This is an issue that easily deflects from the summer doldrums that the CPC have found themselves in, and hey presto, it's a private members bill that goes to a vote. Most private members bills don't go anywhere but this one galvanised the whole Tory caucus, rattled the Libs and NDP and will be a lightning rod in an election.
Not a bad effort.
The Tories have successfully labelled the Libs and NDP as led by ‘Toronto elites’ and several Lib/NDP marginal seats are now in jeopardy. Look beyond your bitterness and see what is really going on.

I guess that kind of thing wins votes in Calgary.

Rob Ford (mayoral candidate) is successfully tapping into a current public disdain for Toronto elites like Bob Rae and Jack Layton's crowd. I'm sure Baird has heard the rumblings that Ford is exploiting. You don't see beyond the obvious do you curty?

Hey, sneer if you want.
The Tories are exploiting a feeling that is very prevalent in the towns and cities that surround TO. Rightly or wrongly, many people in this province outside the shiny ivory towers of Toronto's Lib and NDP ridings view the 'elites' with disdain.
This whole LGR thing will go good for the CPC and bad for at least 6 NDP seats and maybe 10-15 Lib seats. The 'elite' factor is now a prime motivator for voters.
Rob Ford knows it as well. Smitherman is finding it out to his cost. But obviously you know all about this from your basement out West eh?

What money are they planning to save by "killing" half of the registry though? The long gun registry wasn't "created". There was an existing registry that was converted to one that encompasses long guns as well. There was a huge startup cost. To convert it back again will incur more cost, at a time when the registry is down to costing what it was projected to cost in the beginning. The changes to the registry that the opposition parties support is the better way to go.
They can choose to wage war on the ivory towers of Toronto if they want. Go ahead, bring pitchforks and torches. Cooler heads will prevail.

fifeboy fifeboy: tritium tritium: ...and join the USA.. OK, here's the plan. Step 1- Highway 2 to Calgary. Step 2- Stop for Coffee at Krispy Kreme. Step 3- Highway 2 to Fort MacLeod. (No coffee as I am sure you are eager to be on your way) Step 4- Highway 3 to Lethbridge Step 5- Highway 4 to Coutts Step 6- Passage to Freedom. Don't let the door hit your ass on the way out. Sorry, but Kripsy Kreme in cowtown went out of business more than a year ago!

EyeBrock EyeBrock: But, I do believe it's check-mate for rural Libs and NDP MP's. They were already an endangered speices, just like Conservatives in big cities. If you look at the seat distribution, there's more seats in the cities anyways, so I don't see things changing that much really. My guess is that Quebec will still vote Bloc, Alberta will stay Conservative, and most rural seats will go to Conservatives and most urban seats to Liberals/NDP. If anything, I expect the Liberals will rebound and get more seats in the next election, not fewer, especially given Harper's inability to gain in Quebec.

tritium tritium: Job's are there, it's just these " fuckwads" as you put it were earning $20 per/hr before and the only job available is for $8 per/hr.. but that's not good enough for them so the sit on welfare rather than getting a job. It's the nanny state syndrome... But you're a bleeding heart Liberal, just sign your check over to them, and quit trying to tax everyone else to death to pay for these lazy bastards. Bravo. ![Drink up [B-o]](./images/smilies/drinkup.gif)

I think the Tories were on track for another minority but this LGR thing is golden for them. They aren't getting any seats in the 'elite' ridings anyway. This will mean a lot of Lib marginal seats and a few NDP ones are in danger of becoming Tory ridings. The CPC have cemented their policy of partisan politics. They sense traction with the LGR and elite thing and I think they are right. Easy sound bites for an apathetic public. Tt's devisive politics taken to the next level, and it might just get them enough seats to get a majority.

EyeBrock EyeBrock: no web access in jail? You'd know about that from being drunk and disorderly, I've never been there. I just stopped in to see how the apologists were spinning their defeat.

compared to the last 2 votes on this bill, yesterday's vote will be seen as less free of a vote.
although, it would be fair to say that almost all votes were whipped including the tories...i believe the popular perception may shift a bit in their favor.
