Personally, I'm impressed at how professionally the officer conducted himself given the obvious difficulties of the situation. As a member of law enforcement, I know first-hand how much a pain-in-the-ass people can be, especially with a crowd chipping in their two cents and the fact that race (and gender) are /always/ an issue. I hope this officer receives a commendation for his behaviour, though I know political correctness won't allow that to be the case.

Hmmmm. Fascinating.

Yep, I agree Lemmy. He'd be nice on your team eh? Just a tad of a liability.

Give me a break.

He handled the situation badly. There were many better options and this was just bad all around.

Come on. Punching her? It looks awful. A shove could have achieved the same objective in gaining distance.

Agreed, optics is everything.

If I was a cop I'd be hard press to think of a scenario where I'd have to punch a women. It just doesn't look good.

I would of just stalled the situation and wait for back up.

Or if I felt she had to be detained asap would of tried to bring her to the ground with a foot sweep instead, even though that may seriously injure her.

But that's the chance she takes for assaulting an officer.

Even if it was a guy, the cop upped the level of force for no good reason.

The subject dictates the level of force used. It's a basic core principle in the use-of-force. This guy was not good.

I can't help but wonder how any one of we armchair quarterbacks would have reacted in a situation like that?

It's easy to sit back here and criticise when we're nice and safe but, he was in the middle of a physical confrontation with not one but two uncooperative people who, as shown by the video were quite willing to use force to achieve their aims.

It'd be my guess that, if he had to do it over, cranking the stupid bitch in the cakehole wouldn't be his first choice to defuse the situation, but, until we know what he percieved the threat level to be and what he was thinking, we should probably cut him some slack.

Yup, but in his defence.......

He had to punch her in the face, if he had punched her in the chest he would be liable for a sexual assault charge. :D

So you believe that knee-jerk (or should I say fist-jerk) punching a person in the face is a natural response to this sort of situation? (I'm sure there are many cases of this, right)

I wonder if he immediately regretted his use of force.

Punching the bitch in the mouth may not have been the best course of action but he did it and until the reasons for his doing so surface, you might want to take a step back and wait till we know why before condemning him.

But then again, given your post I'll assume you're another of those experts who can assess the situation from a cell phone video clip and then ascertain a persons thought process and why they acted like they did.

Agreed that it was very stupid to put hands on a police officer, but only in Black America do minor offences like jay-walking ever result in this kind of thing. Where else do the cops even bother harassing jaywalkers? Remember Tupac's viscious police beating in Atlanta for jaywalking? Black people in the US know that cops are sent to "high crime" i.e. poor, black neighbourhoods to find excuses to stop and frisk people so they can make drug arrests. Jaywalking is a well-known and well used excuse and Black folks are resentful of it.

Sounds like these cops should be up here in Toronto for the G20... people getting arrested for wearing black t-shirts, people who are arrested for posessing "burglary tools" becaue they had their keys on them ...etc. They are getting arrested and thrown in jail under obviously false charges, (or without charges at all) and then released after a few hours. We're in a fascist police state up here until this billion-dollar dog-and-pony show ends.

Also, I saw 2 US Blackhawk helicopters and 2 Chinook helicopters of unknown nationality overflying the city today. Not a fan of that either.

Some because it's trendy and they're friends are doing it too. Some because they have nothing better to do because the welfare checque hasn't come in. Some because they are anarchists and like chaos for chaos' sake, and some because they want a new blu-ray dvd and or new nike cross trainers. One has to seriously consider that the organizers pick their 'protest' routes based on what stores are along the path.

Jaywalking is a handy offense as most people commit it.

There are all sorts of non-racial descriptors that can motivate a Police Officer to proceed with a ticket.

Like Poverty, Youth, Being out of your house after midnight and Just 'cause the Police was bored and so on and so forth.

The rise in income inequality, environmental destruciton, climate change, increased government secrecy and accountability defecit, outsourcing, globalization, exploiting third world countries, supporting foreign dicators, genetically modified food, increased corporate control and influence over public life, the erosion of the social safety net, erosion of civil liberties, same-sex marriage rights, the financial bail-out...to name but a few off the top of my head.

There's actually quite a long list of things people in this world aren't happy about.
