I like the CBC coverage of American news. The report the news without the
usual BS I have come to expect from many American news Agencies.

Proculation Proculation:
Actually, it's proved they are left leaning. They did a survey some years ago and something like 76% journalists told they were left leaning and that it was influencing their work.

We don't have to prove that, we already know it. What we have to prove is that their leaning doesn't change too much the news.

Journalists don't decide what goes on the news. They're working stiffs. Media owners do. Rupert Murdoch. Conrad Black. Not the most left-leaning guys.

Again, the myth of the left-leaning media is just a trope used by the right to try to control the media.

I don't know--given that teh political centre has shifted quite a bit to the right over the last few years, it hasn't done much harm either. Of course, a lot of that has to do wiht baby boomers getting old, and old people tend to be conservative. Kind of the reverse of the 60s, when all the baby boomers were young liberals. That's my take anyway.

I dont know, Zipperfish -- while this province may have coloured my view a bit, even when I lived in Ontario it felt like the media was left leaning, and I'm fairly lefty myself in a number of ways. As one or two other folks who are left leaners have said in this thread so far, they also feel that there tends to be a direction in which the CBC leans which is farther left than them.

It just seems that, stuff which was sort of glanced at but moved past by the media in the nineties and early 2000s back when I lived in Ontario just isn't missed by the media now with a new party in power.

Of course, everything's relative, but as a publicly funded broadcaster, it's hoped that this media center would stay as objective as possible. I guess the ardent support you often find on the CBC website from the left (and more often than not the crazy left) in the comments section don't help either.

Even if the political center has shifted a bit, then I'd hope CBC has been staying off the political spectrum altogether -- I do feel they have gone farther left than where the center really is, and even then it shouldn't matter. I don't think this is the right way to go about making sure the CBC stays middle of the road, but at least the headline will hopefully make some people think more critically of the articles they read in any of the national newspapers.

I think that you are honest in your assessment ("It seems to me..." "It felt like..."). You recognize in assessing the bias in a newscast,., that your own inherent biases also come into play.

Unfortunately, it's moved from "It seems like that the media are left-leaning" to an assertion of fact "The media are left wing." When asked to provide evidence, it always comes back to "It seems..." or "it feels..." -- personal, subjective terms.

Strategically, the trope of a left-leaning media is a good thing for the right. Judging by the ratings/readership of the various news media, it just doesn't stand up to scrutiny.

The media always have been and always will be activists. Maybe the myth of the left-leaning media comes from the idea that the left used to be more likely to be activist? Who knows. But that has switched now. It is now the political right that is the activist end of the political spectrum.

Right back at you on this.

Tell me where the right-wing media outlets or tv shows are to be found in Canada?

The thing I find most amusing is those who will tout the CBC as an unbiased paragon of virtue are quick to label other networks as biased, ie. Fox news. Every single news source has some bias, including the taxpayer supported CBC.

Yeah it's just when that bias becomes an agenda there's an issue.

Of course all news has some bias or slant. But, we only pay for the CBC's particular bias which is why it rubs.

Personally I've stopped watching the CBC for anything other than the Dragon's Den and Coronation Street.

I can't wait to watch our media in action over the G20, especially seeing as I'll be there at G20 GZ.

I'm taking my camera!

I don't watch TV news much, but the National Post leans right from my perspective.
