Eisensapper Eisensapper: With our special little boy's comments aside what do the women think about this story? Is a reason to celebrate the liberation of women, or is it just a slow news day? I don't think I would so much label this the liberation of women. The fact that it is a first for women in this regard does make it newsworthy. My basis for this is women who may be considering entering the Canadian Forces, it shows them there are no barriers ( or at least the breaking down of barriers) in terms of gender and promotion.

Do women still feel that the Canadian military is a 'mans only' occupation?

I would say a majority perceive it that way, Yes. The reason for it, is because it is predominantly male...as any military historically has been. But that is changing, from what I can see....Are female recruitment numbers up? And in what capacity do they play a role....now I think that would be more newsworthy to have the stats.

Very true.
Do you feel that being a female can hold you back in some places in Canada still?

They included that there are 15 women on the ship in total, but really I dont think that speaks to how imporant women are in the military. I know that I have seen more women in my trade in this year than in the last 3.

Recruiting for the Army trades may still be male dominated but in th ekinder gentler Navy with our 3 hot meals, hot showers, and hot bunks we along with the Chairforce get most females. I would say at least 1/2 of all new MARS officers are female and about 25% of Eng Officers are female. Within the Navy though some trades are harder for females to do though, such as Marine Engineering most dont succeed and those that do are very tough.

This years army boot camp had approx 5 women in a platoon ( 60 people in a platoon). So women are in the army trades just not in great numbers....yet.

Eisensapper Eisensapper: My fiance is in basic right now and out of a platoon of 40, 7 are women. That sounds about standard from my experience. The question is how long do they last after basic. I find, from the reserve side of things at least, that the women don't tend to stay as long as the guys do. Not true for all women thats for sure, but very few "make a career" of it so to speak.

Yup Saint Jean sur Richelian, they started off with 10 women and 50 guys but several were cut because they failed the PT test.

Hehe RMS Clerk, now they dont really say "We have a course coming up get 50 men and 10 women", basically it is how ever many that they have at the moment. So when he went through their might just have been only 5 girls, but it was probably an anomaly. I will say this though, most of the women I know who do join are because their husband or boyfriend are in the military as well.

Funny you should say that two friends he met their ended up getting engaged Somehow I can't see this horsesmouth's wife joining the military anytime soon, as in never I think she'd rather eat shit and die Anyway you cut it though it's by far an easy life.
