Did you see that map the "member of the Mexican navy" was looking at?? Must be from the 1700's!! The shape of Florida looks triangular instead of like a peninsula. The most powerful and devastating hurricanes go through the Gulf of Mexico's warm waters and head north. Over hundreds or thousands of years it could naturally dissolve the island..................if there ever was an island where they think it was.
