This is not limited to this Harper government in this global slowdown. This is the legacy of Conservatvies in Canaad and Republicans in the US over the last twenty or thirty years. They have simply shown themsleves to be incapable of responsible budget management.

I'm really surprised that the Liberals didn't make this, and especially the fact the fact that they've ran a surplus throughout their tenure, a major part of their campaign. They might have mentioned it a few times in passing but didn't focus on it.

Dion bolloxed it all up from Day 1 with his carbon tax. Canadians don't actually want to do anything about climate change but they want to feel morally superior, so you devise a policy that matches that aspiration. You know, "We'll create a world-calss research centre where scientists will asses the imapcst of climate change" or "we'll create carbon sequestration technology that wie'll sell to China in the 'new eocnomy.'" That sort of thing.

And yes--hammer the message home that if you want deficit spending, vote Conservative. The Conservatvies don't even like government, as they are at great pains to tell everyone, so why would you vote to put them i charge of it?

So pretty much every country in the world is going to have a deficit, but it's the conservatives fault. Makes sense to me.

This is not limited to this Harper government in this global slowdown. This is the legacy of Conservatvies in Canaad and Republicans in the US over the last twenty or thirty years. They have simply shown themsleves to be incapable of responsible budget management. And they have proved themselves incapable of taking responsbility for thier failure to do so. Look in this thread, for example, at how many are blaming not the Conservatives for creating this projected deficit, but the Liberals for not stopping them. It boggles the mind!

But see, even when Harper wanted to cut the arts budget, people were up in arms! Any cuts to any budget pisses somebody off.

So when the Liberals cut the military budget (which, to nobody's surprise, the media basically ignored) and raise taxes on the "rich" while increasing social spending just enough to please their constituents, without going into the red.

HOWEVER. Cutting any social spending will get you demonized in the media, and even on this site. Look at some lefties when Harper wanted to cut the art budget. The media was shitting cats and dogs, leftists were calling the Conservatives barbarians and such (even on this site) and anybody with some artistic background got a camera for 30 second news clips. People think you can just cut social spending without issue. You can't. So Conservatives need to try to cut without people noticing, while trying to lower taxes for all, and keeping the nation secure.

It does not help that the media does not like the Conservatives and does not report the full truth. The Conservative did not cut funding to arts, they raised funding, but cut a few programs that were working right.
