The irony is that the most oppressed people in the world are actually the poor and middle class Americans - wage earners with no opportunity to do anything but survive by working their whole lives and raising their children on MTV so that they become consumer whores.

What if you didn't have to work so hard - what if you could raise your children, what if you could relax when you are sick and let someone take care of you. Maybe having cash feels good, maybe having a purpose in life besides working and spending is better.

What is this dribble? I have seen many people pull themselves up the economic pay ladder. My parents included. At my school, it was rated number one in economic and social mobility. Many people I goto class with, come from poorer familes. They will be poor after graduation.

If anything, America is the best place possible to go up in the world. Bill Gates, Micheal Dell, and others all started with nothing. Could you start a business and expect it to grow into a billion dollar multinational in Canada? France? Germany? I would bet you would have to do everything through corporations and government support.

Its not the dirt poor Burmese with a military government that refuses aid during a typhoon and shoots unarmed monks. Its not dirt poor North Koreans who were eating grass a few years ago due to a self-induced famine. Its not the residents of Darfur who are starving to death and having to endure mass rape and killing.

Oh no, its not they whom are the most oppressed in the world. Instead, its poor AND middle class Americans who have to endure the indignities of shopping!

Venezuela has given the country's largest foreign cement companies 60 days to strike a deal on the nationalization of their assets or face expropriation, according to an official gazette published yesterday.

President Hugo Chavez said several months ago he would take over the Venezuelan units of Mexico's Cemex, Switzerland's Holcim Ltd. and France's Lafarge SA – some of the world's biggest cement producers.

The order in the gazette said the state would take at least a 60 per cent stake in the takeovers, adding the companies could negotiate over continuing as minority partners in their units and over compensation for the loss of their assets.

Once negotiations are over with the companies that dominate Venezuela's cement industry, the state will complete the transfer of ownership and operations by the end of the year, the gazette said.
