WDHIII WDHIII: proudcanukchick proudcanukchick: newfette newfette: but common sense just isn't that common anymore Bingo! You got it! So... rather than passing legislation for every freakin' thing on the continent, let's TEACH our children common sense! Brilliant, eh! And until our children are old enuff to impact this we just let the fools who dont know any better continue to expose their kids to this? Leading by example is GREAT but not all people do that.... hence the law
You know, it is illegal to run a red light too... You get fined if you get caught. How many people do it anyways?

Learning by watching others make mistakes is also a very handy tool.
Then again, you need some common sense to implement that.

We also have laws against murder, but common sense should tell us that murder is bad.

So... rather than passing legislation for every freakin' thing on the continent, let's TEACH our children common sense! Brilliant, eh! I guess when it get's to the point of laws being passed it's because common sense just wasn't working. To be honest I didn't really think there was a bad enough problem that it needed a law, but I also can't understand anyone being against that law.
Says who? How many people really do smoke in their cars with kids nowadays?
Why should the government butt in again? Big Brother is watching you again. Why? Don't we have any rights anymore? Does everything have to be regulated?

Because stupid crap like this snowballs...
Where will it end? How many more decisions will be stripped from adults by laws implemented by government, in order to compensate for lack of common sense?
At some point PEOPLE have to take the initiative to act responsibly, and be accountable for their own actions and. As long as the government keeps sticking their nose in, it's only a matter of time before individuals no longer HAVE to make a decision for themselves. THEN where do we sit?

Yes, my Mum smoked in the car when I was a kid, and I don't smoke in my car... I actually don't smoke at all. So I guess I learned by watching her mistakes, and my kids will benefit.... but I didn't, did I?
No? You didn't learn anything? You didn't take your experience and pass that knowledge down to your children?

Common sense tells me that things like this don't snowball. People will stand up against law that dont' actually make sense. What could possibly snowball from this? That you can't smoke in the same room as a child. Amen.

When I was a kid, everyone minded their own business and looked the other way when we saw kids show up at school with bruises. Now there's a law that requires people to report suspected cases of abuse. I like today better.
Really? They looked the other way then, and now because they HAVE TO say something about bruises (and accuse possible innocent people of child abuse, with everything that comes with it) they don't?
I don't believe that one bit.

Welcome to reality.
Yep. That's how it works.
Sorry, I don't know of anyone (and I know a LOT of people) who had perfect parents that did everything right, and never exposed their children to something that they maybe shouldn't have been.
Guess what - we all lived, and those of us with common sense learned a few things from that exposure. It's called the great circle of life.

And you are still around to share it with us

I'd be curious to hear the actual reasons why some are against this law.

How many will convince you that this law is warranted? Brenda Brenda: Why should the government butt in again? Big Brother is watching you again. Why? Don't we have any rights anymore? Does everything have to be regulated?
Brenda, you are the champion of driving smokers with children everywhere!

But some DONT - and thats the whole point. Would you rather the Govt back off on drinking and driving. car seats, speed laws? I know the line is hazy but I think saving SOME kids from SHS is worth the intrusion by the Govt. Bottom line is IT HAPPENS..... would you rather they DIDNT implement this and put ONE child whos parents dont know better at risk?
Every day we set poor examples for our children.
You don't have kids, but I'm sure at some point you've had "one too many" in front of your nephews....
Did that set a good example to them? Should you have exposed them to the "wonderful world of partying and getting sh**faced? What if that would have let them to alcoholism or drinking and driving?
Point is - none of us are perfect. We all make mistakes and do things we shouldn't.
Yes - there are stupid people out there. Rather than passing laws, we should be trying to educate those people. Not legislate them.

Whether parents in the past were perfect or not is inconsequental...the fact is that the Govt is putting this law in place to help SOME kids whose parents JUST DONT GET it is. The fact that a few are upset because of its BIG BROTHER telling us what and what NOT to do is just sad. But I guess if its not THEIR children... So much for "it takes a village" Darwin would be proud.
Village - not a government.
