BartSimpson BartSimpson: ...the fact that Canada has abdicated too much of their defense to the USA.
Too much. Its sad, I think about the Canadian Forces of old, and how the Germans in two world wars trembled at our arrival. Now, now we barely can defend what we got. I respect the states, but how can we be independent and rely on a foreign power for our protection?

Oh cry the same old song. WHen the Norks land on Long Beach, or Nicaraguans storm the Bay of Fundy when the Russian tanks pour across the North Pole or the Iranian Navy takes the Seaway the will be no one to stop them... thank God for the Glorious Yanks!

BartSimpson BartSimpson: If you don't like him then he must be doing something right. ![Drink up [B-o]](./images/smilies/drinkup.gif) Au contraire mon ami, didn't you read, I'm all for Trump and just said I wish he gets re-elected and makes some kind of changes in the law than he can serve a further two terms after that too or just declare himself ruler for life through some legal loophole if possible. Who needs enemies when you have friends like Trump Its the best thing that has happened to the world this century, there might be a little bit of upheaval in the world, some discomfort, but in the end it will be all worth it. I just feel sorry for my Canadian friends who have to live so close to him and probably most effected by Trump due to the close symbiotic relationship the two countries have, guess its a wake up call for Canada too, that its about time it severed that umbilical cord. And Canadians are a great people and nation and I think the world would rather deal with them then than the Americans, they just need to step out of America's shadow a little bit more first.

I've been saying all along Canada doesn't need a military, its waste of billions for no reason. Lets say the US is stupid enough to attack and occupy Canada. Canada does not need to fire a single shot to win that war. The world community come together against US faster than bees to honey. How long do you think the US can stay isolated from rest of the world, with blockades, embargoes and sanctions from sea to shining sea.

I respect the states, but how can we be independent and rely on a foreign power for our protection? It's a myth that we rely on the US for protection - there is no nation in the world that could successfully invade Canada, even if the US stood by and ignored it. Nobody has enough sealift to put more than a division or two on Canadian soil - and for most nations, that would involve shipping them here on freighters/cruise ships or highly vulnerable airliners. While that matches the entire Canadian Army, our membership in NATO, long supply lines, the huge territory that Canada covers prevents such a small force from doing anything other than temporarily holding a small piece of Canada until we mobilize and push them back into the ocean. If an invader landed near a major city, it probably wouldn't even be able to take over that city, because cities and armies just don't mix. The truth is we rely on two huge oceans and a friendly neighbour to avoid conflict. As long as the US remains friendly, we don't have to worry about an invasion...but who knows where Cheeto is heading with his love of dictatorships and authoritarian regimes. T

We should increase our military spending anyway but the jackass in chief deserves a generic response to his public letter.

Sunnyways Sunnyways: We should increase our military spending anyway but the jackass in chief deserves a generic response to his public letter. Anyway ? Good Lord, is that what are now down to ? That 'letter' went to several countries, not just us. The Lieberal plan is to explain to Trump that we are in fact contributing more than 1%, because we don't count payments to vets, and hey, we only just missed our diversity targets for women in Mali. So we are ok, and nothing needs to be done. The idiocy is going to be epic. The second target is Germany, not just because trade, not only because Merkel gave a nonsense answer to 2% last time asked, saying oh yes maybe we will get sort of close to it by 2030. But Merkel might not survive the EU summit happening now, because the illegal migrant chickens have come to roost.

T I get that, our Geography would make invading Canada as much fun as invading Russia. But you have to admit, we do base a large part of our defense strategy on the idea that the United States will come rushing to our aid.

If Putin is our great misunderstood friend, as Trump keeps saying he is, then why do we need to increase defense spending at all?

Thanos Thanos: then why do we need to increase defense spending at all? -- because arms dealers need money too! If Canadians do not hand over their hard-earned cash and submit to Trump's blackmail, the big bad Americans will send The Village People up to attack us.
