What was racist?
Here in Canada, Germans and Italians (and some others) were interred if they thought they were a threat. ALL Japanese Canadians were interred.
Because, rightly or wrongly they were deemed a threat just like the women and children from Germanicus who came to Canada in 1876 were.
Nobody's saying that there wasn't racial prejudice in the interring of the Japanese but to say it was the sole cause of their internment is disingenuous and for the record both the Liberal and Conservative parties fanned the flames of that prejudice.
But histories revisionists seem to want to judge the actions of the passed from todays pulpit which ends up with this type of assumption.
Interring Japanese bad, interring Germans who'd been here for 76 years is okay because there weren't as many of them and they were white.
None of them should have been interred for the duration of the war. If they were as big a threat as made out to be they should have been interred vetted and the innocent ones released. But unfortunately if you read the WWII histories of places like Burma, Malaysia, Singapore, Hong Kong, the Philippines and Hawaii you'd discover that there was an extensive network of Japanese 5th columnists, military members included conducting sabotage, gathering intel, spreading rumours and conducting other nefarious activities.
So, despite today's revisionists claims, there was a genuine cause for concern about national security.
