There are all kinds of disingenuous ways to present statistics in misleading ways. One of the more common tactics is to turn raw data into percentages to overstate importance. How many baseball bets get sold in England in a year, typically? They wouldn't have had to sell very many bats for sales to be up 9000 percent.

You'd have to ask Amazon about how they calculate their numbers.

So me willing to defend myself makes me uncivilized? wow then I guess you and all those other civilized people in the world will die with a smile on your face going yeah I could have saved my life, I could have protected my family and property but dang it I'm civilized so didn't.

Can you imagine what happens if ALL these people out on the streets in the UK would carry guns?? BLOODBATH!!!

Omg, that you don't understand that is beyond me. These people already think they have nothing to lose. If they would have carried guns, these people who NOW are protecting their neighbourhoods would not stand a chance. Now they do, and they succeed.

Generally speaking, I'm not terribly keen on uncontrolled gun prolifieration, however, part of me is curious about open carry and whether that would actually bring down casualties and crime or increase it.

I'm alright with less control on gun proliferation, but mainly for selfish reasons. ;)

But I'm with you being curious to see how that would affect things.

Monday night's scenes in London were absolutely incredible. I've never seen anything like it. The police have said it was the worst violence in the capital in living memory. It was probably London's worst riots since the anti-Catholic Gordon Riots of 1780, when the mob burned Newgate Gaol (where the Old Bailey now stands) and freed the prisoners. The prison had to be rebuilt and stood until 1902. The riots were so bad that the army was called out and shot dead 285 people and wounded another 200. Other prisons burned were The Clink (which gave its name to the slang word for prison) which was never rebuilt and Fleet debtors' prison. The Bank of England was also attacked and so were the homes and businesses of Catholics. Thirty people were eventually executed. The current riots have yet to reach that level.

One of the most heartbreaking scenes was the destruction of a furniture shop in Croydon, south London.

Image

The shop - The House of Reeves - has been a family run business since 1867 and survived the zeppelins and the Luftwaffe of two world wars. Its current owner, 56 year old Trevor Reeves, was almost in tears when interviewed live on Sky News on Monday night whilst seeing live images of it burning on Sky News. The business was set up by his great-great-grandfather in 1867 and has been run by the family since and now he, his brother and his wife and children are now without a livelihood. So are the shop's workers who are now out of jobs. It was held so close to the heart of the local community that the part of Croydon where it stood is named Reeves Corner. All that's left of the building is a gutted shell - like something out of the Blitz - and it will be pulled down.

Image

And what will be the enduring image of the London riots will be the woman leaping to safety into the arms of police officers and members of the public from her upper storey flat (apartment) which was situated right next to the House of Reeves inferno and above a chemist's. The rescuers has laid out cushions and carpet rolls onto the floor beneath the woman. Sitting on an awning below her flat window, she eventually plucks up the courage to leap to safety. After thanking her rescuers, wearing just her nightwear, the shaken woman runs away.

The riots now surely have nothing to do with what happened to Mark Duggan in Tottenham. Croydon is in south London, about as far south in that vast city as you can get, and Tottenham (which is merely part of the London borough of Haringey) is in north London. The two are about 20 miles apart. A vast distance also separates Hackney, east London (where Monday's riots started), and leafy Ealing, west London, and riots occurred last night in Manchester and Birmingham, so the riots have nothing to do with what happened to Mark Duggan in Tottenham. It's just that British youth are prone to violence, saw what happened in Tottenham on Saturday night when the police were powerless, and then thought they'd start rioting to for fun.

British youth are the most unpleasant and violent in the world: http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article ... riots.html

The rioters also have no concern about human life. The shop which was burnt to the ground in Tottenham on Saturday night - a Carpetright store - had families, including children, living in the flats above it. Thankfully the residents all managed to escape, including a woman with a tiny baby. Amazingly, one resident, who lived in a flat above the shop, shouted down to the rioters not to torch the building as there were children living in it. But the rioters just ignored them and went ahead anyway.

Families with children lived in flats above the Carpetright store which was burnt to the ground in Tottenham, in the borough of Haringey, north London, on Saturday night

A COUPLE made homeless by this inferno yesterday told how baying mobs ignored their pleas not to torch their block.

Garnett and Patricia Fisher were among 26 terrified families who fled for their lives after the historic building was engulfed by flames.

When the gangs first began loitering menacingly outside their home, the couple feared they were in danger.

Patricia, who also escaped with her 15-year-old son, said: “My other half leaned out the window and said to the rioters, ‘There are families and children living up here, don’t set the place alight’ but they did anyway.

“Garnett called the fire brigade and when we went on the landing there was thick black smoke everywhere.

“When we got outside, there was no police or fire brigade to help. Because we’re Tottenham, poor run-down Tottenham, I feel we were ignored.”

Their ordeal was echoed by the Malik family who also lost everything when the ferocious blaze spread from the ground floor Carpetright store to the River Heights flats above – the worst-hit building in Saturday night’s riots in Tottenham.

Omar, 47, said his five-year-old son Oscar was asleep when the gangs outside went on the rampage.

He said: “It was absolute mayhem and anarchy.

“Neighbours were banging on the doors and telling everyone to get out and to run.

“There was so much noise, windows were breaking and people were shouting.

“We fled in the clothes we were wearing and Oscar was in his pyjamas.”

Taxi driver Omar says his son was traumatised following the harrowing ordeal.

Oscar was plucked from his bed by his dad and Polish mum Barbara, 45, and rushed to safety – leaving their home and belongings behind.

Within minutes, the building – which had survived German bombers during the Second World War – was burnt to a shell.

The next day Oscar was so upset his father asked him to draw a picture about the fire.

And in spite of all that destruction, Court Officers are already saying the chance
of any underage looter getting anything more than a caution would be slim to none.

Adults might get something, but they'll be back soon enough.

The people running the gov't programs are already whining for more money,
too fucking stupid to realize there isn't any more money to pour
down the toilet.

+1. Which is why the spoiled children contiue it night after night. It stopped being about a police shooting long ago, and now is probabally 'just something to do' because they have no job to go to tomorrow.

A student mugged during the London riots needs surgery after having his jaw broken by thugs.

Ashraf Haziq, a Malaysian student who has only been in Britain a month, was with a friend in Barking, east London, on Monday - the worst day of the violence so far - when his way was blocked by a gang of young thugs. His friend managed to run away but Ashraf was violently assaulted.

And then, in disturbing film footage which has been shown several times on Sky News and BBC News 24, another group of thugs appear who at first appear to be helping Ashraf. But, after helping Ashraf to his feet, the gang open his rucksack and take his wallet and mobile run whilst blood pours from Ashraf's mouth onto the floor.

He was in "high spirits" in hospital last night but needed surgery on his jaw today.

Wan Azim, consular officer of the High Commission of Malaysia in London, visited him in the Royal London Hospital yesterday afternoon.

Mr Azim said: "He is doing OK but his jaw is fractured or broken. His face was very swollen. I asked if he had any other injuries, but he said not.

"He can't speak very well. He can't eat at the moment so he's being fed through a drip.

"We think he will need a metal plate in his jaw. He was being assessed yesterday and will have surgery today."

Wellwishers have begun a Twitter campaign to replace Ashraf's stolen possessions.

The nation was horrified when footage emerged yesterday of the Malaysian lad being robbed as blood poured from his mouth.

YouTube footage captured one of the most callous assaults of four days of rioting that sparked widespread condemnation.

Louts at first tried to comfort Ashraf and helped him to his feet but then rifled through his rucksack and stole his wallet and mobile phone.

He was then abandoned and was seen standing dazed by the side of the road.

The Prime Minister vented his disgust over Monday's incident.

Theft ... yobs rifle through lad's rucksack

Today David Cameron said: "When we see children as young as 12 and 13 looting and laughing, when we see the disgusting sight of a young man with people pretending to help him while they are robbing him, it is clear that there are things badly wrong with our society."

Wellwishers have begun a Twitter campaign to replace Ashraf's stolen possessions.

Ashraf had been fasting for Ramadan and was on his way to visit a friend when he was set upon.

Mr Azim added: "They suddenly blocked his way and attacked him. He was with another friend who managed to run away, but Ashraf was caught and assaulted.

Image
Hurt ... gang see injured boy

"He was lying on the floor when another group came along. They initially went to help him, but unfortunately they took his wallet and mobile phone.

"He also had a bicycle with him — that was either taken or damaged as well.

"I feel so sorry for him. He came here to study, he's only been here a month. He really was in the wrong place at the wrong time, you can't predict this kind of thing."

Image
Disgusting ... they steal from his rucksack

When he became the rioters' prey, Ashraf was too preoccupied with trying to stop the bleeding from his mouth to notice he was being robbed until the last minute when he lashed out.

A dozen older thugs stood around and watched as their pals stole an item from his bag before wandering off, discarding some wrapping and appearing to keep hold of the stolen goods.

In the background of the film, a man says: "Are they actually helping him up? Oh my God. Are they going through his bag?

"He just took something from his bag. D***head."

The footage, believed to have been filmed in Barking, East London, was posted online along with the comment: "This is evil. A poor lad, obviously in distress, sits bleeding on the ground. He is 'helped' up and then robbed. I hope these scumbags are caught."

Clearly Mr. Haziq must have been a member of the ruling class, or else he would have been spared, right?

seems fairly quiet tonight... so far.

Couple minor things only.

About 1000 people have been arrested, that might have something to do with it. ;)

If it wasn't so serious it would almost be comical. From my point of view as a soldier, there are many different opinions to contimplate and in many cases laugh at.

1. This was all sparked by the police murdering a good man who did not fire his gun at the police. He was a known drug dealer and even though he may not have fired at police, he was still armed and probably pointed the gun at the police which will get you shot every time.

2. The riots/looting/arson are a result of poverty, unemployment, racism, etc, etc. Some of the deviants may fit this description but there is a whole spectrum of the population involved. Some of those arrested include a Teacher, a Chef and an 11 yr old boy. I've seen footage of the kids looting the shops and alot of them are dressed in the latest designer gear and filming their deeds on the newest iphones and blackberries. The fact that 9,10,11 year olds are on the streets past 9:00 pm is shocking to me and I am the father of a 10 yr old. Parents obviously have their part to play.

3. Some social commentators have attributed the actions in some way to the result of a generation of children growing up without fathers and having a hard upbringing. I don't have any expertise in this myself but i'm sure there are many single parent families out there that would have something to say about this.

4. Bring in the army! And do what, shoot them all. As good as that might sound to some, it's not reality. Not many of our units are trained in crowd control these days.

5. They should all be made to do National Service, that'll teach them. No thanks, I wouldn't want any of them in my army.

I think my exact words were "Stay in Texas and don't move to the civilized world."

Other than that, the police aren't even using guns, not even with rubber bullets. And you know what? I personally rather see my house burnt down than my mom get killed by my neighbour who is shooting the wrong person. I can replace my house, not my mom.

Then you've missed the whole point and yeah stay out of Texas if you think it's uncivilized then you truly have no idea what you are talking about.

I had no intention of going there, don't worry. I don't like states where every moron can carry a gun and have the death penalty to boot.

This coming from some one who wants to use robber bullets on unarmed people. Who says that she would rather watch her house burn then stop the looters with a gun because she knows the house can be replaced. Please explain to the shop owner and those who lived above it how all their stuff and homes and shop will be replaced.
I see how civilized London is because they have no guns.
