EyeBrock EyeBrock:

I didn't think you were aiming it at me andy, I just thought it was a good segway into getting the point out there that many of us ex-military types have our own personal views on the war and many of us disagree.

The only thing with me is I'm aware that my personal views as an ex-mil type may hurt the morale of our guys serving over there.

I'll wait until our guys have left before I'm vocal on the mission as it would be bad form for me personally.

On the cops, nothing is perfect but I'm for getting rid of bad apples quickly. 99% of the cops are.

Fact is, I think the vast majority of guys and gals in the CF have a ton of common sense on what society thinks of the missions they are on, and I also think the vast majority can differentiate between support for the soldiers/sailors/air crew by the public, which is high, and support for the mission in Afghansitan for example, which is not high. These people, I highly doubt, would be discouraged if they knew you didn't agree with the mission but wholeheartedly supported them as they did it. They get how freedom and democracy work and frankly, I suspect most would rather see positive well thought dissent and good public dialogue as indicators of what they are fighting for in other countries.

My two thoughts though...

Would you believe that when Québec had it's first referendum, no military could get on base at Valcartier with a "Oui" sticker on his car?

I know it has nothing to do with this subject, just a souvenir that popped in my head. :D

I should certainly hope not.

A 'Oui' sticker during a seccesionist referendum on a CF member's car?

Treason.

Get out, then support busting up the country. Burns my ass when I come across soverigntists every once in a while. Have a lot of fun dropping them down a peg or two though.

That's a little confusing. WTF are you doing in Canada's military if you support separation? I guess it's like the Bloc sitting in Parliament. I don't know where this idea of the French as the people of reason comes from. Certainly don't see it in the Quebecois. Logic does not seem to be their strong suit.

The young one, mostly. A lot of hormones and energy, but never took 5 minutes to think it over.

Don't tell me, you never did anything stupid in your younger years?

Oh, the professional protesters have found another cause have they? They're not making headlines anymore chaining themselves to trees in BC so they had to find something else and this is the best they came up with? Must have been a slow news day when they had their executive meeting at Starbucks in Surrey.

Protesters chaining themselves to trees in BC's War in the Woods back in the 90's saved some of the most beuatiful and pristine wilderness on the island from yet another massive unsightly clearcut - and being a sailor I've seen a lot of them that the public won't see. I should think an avid outdoorsman such as yourself would at the very least, appreciate that.

Sometimes the professional protestors are a pain, but sometimes they get it right.

Oh Gunny, a mountain just doesn't look right without a big, unsightly clear cut slap dab in the middle of it.... Plus, clear cuts are good places to hunt as they actually hold the best feeding areas for game. The plant life that most big game need to survive, don't grow well with a large canopy over them.

I wasn't taking a shot at protecting forests, there was a good end result from those protests. Do you remember back then all the other protests that were going on? Watching the news it seemed that there was a new cause every week and low and behold, the same protesters seemed to be at every friggen one of them. Clayoquot Sound one week, gay rights the next, low income housing the following week. Now don't get me wrong, all viable reasons and issues, but for the longest time in BC it was a full time job for some people to attend protests. This "issue" just rings
of those by gone days. I have a feeling that Svend Robinson will make an appearance at the protest, just for old time sake.

Oh I remember some of them - I went to university with a guy named Garth Mullen back in the 90's and I saw the guy on the news protesting the Olympics!

That being said, to be honest, without that handful ofm professional protestors to flash up the rest, the outstanding results of the War in the Woods or the ongoing efforts to protect the great Bear Rainforest wouldn't happen. So, although there are times when I hate to admit it, these guys often do good. Sometimes, however, I wish they'd focus their ire on better issues.

Then again, when I sail into Clayoquat Sound and see the rainforest that was protected...

Thats the problem, the "issues". Many of them protest for the sake of protesting something. When you saw the same people over and over again, you had to wonder, who is paying them to be there? Do they work for a living or were they on the government dole?

They were on the dole, my friend, no doubt. Clayoquat was one of those times as a taxpayer I didn't mind funding them.

I dont think most hippies care about that, they just want that warm fuzzy they get when they 'stick it to the man'

I'm no hippie, but I do love "sticking it to the man." I thought everyone did. 'Cept The Man of course.

I'm painfully aware that in a few years, my son will be a teenager and I'll be The Man. Hopefully my son doesn't like sticking it to The Man as much as I did, but early signs are not encouraging.

OMG I agree, my boy is 12 this year and if he's half the shit disturber I was then I'm in for allot more grey hairs soon.

Because they like guns and want to learn english.

For the Bloc its because they like great salaries and lofty pensions.
