bootlegga bootlegga: martin14 martin14: pffffff, I'll bet we have more. DING! DING! DING! Martin wins a prize! Canada has the world's second largest oil reserves (only Saudi Arabia has more). Second largest proven reserves, that is not counting the stuff for which we don't yet have the ability to extract. Count the stuff that we will one day be able to extract, and we eclipse the Saudis too. And after the oil, we still have minerals, forests, one of the largest producers of wheat and other grains on the planet . . .and the UAE has some sand.

Everything UAE seems to be doing right now is to establish for themselves a post-oil survival plan by turning themselves into the world's playground for the rich. Tall buildings, ultra-luxury hotels, private islands, all to draw in the rich, the tourists, and the rich tourists.
Seeking direct flights is probably in service of that plan - to make it easier to get there, and if you're flying Emirates, you're flying in style, so all the better.
That their government tried to step in is little different than our government going on trade junkets - it's just that their trade is tourism, so they need tourists, so they want to get them there as easily as they can.
I'm not saying it's right or wrong, that's just how I see it all working together and so it might be understandable.
