They should float their boats back to where ever they came from.

Agreed, if people have a problem with their kids saying they love Canada once and awhile. They can go ahead and get them exempted from participating from signing the anthem, and then then the dumbass parent can face the wraith of the child when he/she comes home complaing about being judged as an outcast due to some parents projected insecurities. Idiots.

Love it or leave it.

Yep, I think it's about time we demanded loyalty from the millions of immigrants we let in.
Sing our anthem or fuck right off.

FUCK YEAH

No, I don't think people who don't commit to our country should be taken in the same way as those that do.

Brenda, your credibility has just dived.
Don't give us your heart-felt opinions if you can't even commit to our country. You are 'just visiting'.

Enjoy your stay.

Ah, ok. So a choice that I make, to not go for citizenship (maybe my husband will, which makes me a dual citizen because I will be married to a Canadian citizen, and tehn I can keep my dutch one), as long as my parents live, because I choose to pick them over bureacrasy makes me not credible anymore?
Whatever floats your boat.

I have to agree - if one comes here, is it too much to ask one commit to some of the things that Canadians cherish? The National Anthem, for instance, is hardly a significant burden, so i have to question why one's motives for questioning it.

I have never said I won't sing it or my kids don't. I said "not every day". I guess that little detail got lost in patriotism.

I think what he is saying is in regards to some pretty strong statements/arguments (far beyond just opinions) you make regarding Canadian traditions/laws, lifestyle, government/Military/law enforcement ect . You have a way of coming off as the moral authority on certain subjects, whether intended or not, can be grating, yet very "pleasant" in other forums. The fact that you choose not to become a citizen (for whatever your reasons) yet shoot off on these things to the tune of pages and pages of arguments, well I think you get his point.

EB is this what you meant? I think it was

To me, it doesn't matter whether I am a citizen or not. I won't change my feelings towards the country. It is a piece of paper that I can do without (just as I could do without a marriage certificate).
If you think a marriage is worth more than a common-law partner ship, then I guess you will think citizenship is more than PR too.
(fyi, the only difference between citizenship and PR is the ability to vote)

I don't think that way.

When I was a kid it the line "God keep outr land" was actually "O Canada." The God thing was not part of heritage, it was put in their by religous conservatives. Indoctrination 101, I guess.

anyways I try to mix it up a bit by singing "Satan keep our land..." o0r "FSm keep our land..." I'm all about religious equality!

I'm glad they did. Jeez they were using "We Stand on Guard for Thee" way too many times in the original.

Plus, the French lyrics always referred to the Cross, anyway.

Yeah, I'm not big on the whole god thing, but I can live with it.

I always belt the anthem out at the Giants and Whitecaps games, except when I'm yelling at the kids to "Shuddup they're playing the f***ing anthem." Just joking (Hasnon Brothers line, Slap Shot).

Pen, what I mean is, step up to the plate and be a Canadian or those Maple Leaves on Brenda's avatar of 'Forum super elite' should be changed to the Cloggy Tri-colour.

My view is, you are either a Canadian or you are not.

If you want to come here and take advantage of the the truly great country this is, please at least swear a pledge of loyalty to us and carry our passport. Encourage your kids to sing 'O Canada' and embrace our culture and ideals.

If not, don't preach to us if you are just visiting. You can always go home if you don't like what we do.

I am not becoming Canadian. I lose my Dutch citizenship when I do, and I am not willing to do that as long as my parents are alive.

Can you imagine applying for a visa to go take care of my parents when one of them gets sick? Neither do I. So, that is not happening.

Is that right? Does a Canadian need a visa to go to Holland?

I was born in the UK and have dual citizenship. Even as a Canadian I don't need a visa for the UK and I thought it was the same for all Western European nations.

To live? yes.
Holland doesn't allow dual citizenship.

I'm sympathetic with your position. I wouldn't want the hassle of a visa to visit my relatives. Glad I didn't have to make such a decision.

Useful to have a Canadian passport though. Twice I recently drove to the US with a Brit. Easy for me to get through. She was fingerprinted and photographed. No visa required though which made it a lot easier.

Not to visit (as long as it is under 3 months, I believe). to live. and work too.

I know, I live 10 kms from the border, I get printed and mugshot every 3 months. AND pay US$6
