The two dilemmas are currently creating a scandal in Mexico and there is growing demand for an investigation into the haze surrounding the disappearance of the island of Bermeja, which was present for centuries on maps as part of the Yucatan but was erased from them in 1977.

According to that article, it has been erased from the maps in 1977.

So I still dunno when it was last seen!
We have a new Ogopogo at hand here!

This is what happens when you suck all the oil out of the ground and do not replace it with water. The surface collapes. The Island is likely on top of an oil deposit that has been depleted and the crust of the Earth holding it up has sunk. It would be especially noticable with the heavier weight of the island mass.

The way to eliminate the affect and to get more oil from the deposit is to pump water into the space as you suck the oil out.

llama66 llama66:
its on bearing 295, about 197 miles NW of cancun. if thats the right island it looks like its nothing more then a sandbar... Lat/Long 22°22'48.93"N 89°39'24.31"W (assuming that this is the correct island...)

TattoodGirl TattoodGirl:
Well I found another odd article saying that it was last seen in that time here... http://www.granma.cu/ingles/2008/diciem ... rious.html

From TG's article, it lists the coordinates of the island as 22 33'N 91 22'W.

Google Earth shows nothing there. From 40 Miles altitude to 1000', nada.

The only thing out there is "Cayo Arenas" at 22 07'N 91 23'W.

it was probably a sandbar, they referred to it as an islet. I'm guessing that a combination of that aforementioned earthquake, and storm surge from a hundred hurricanes wiped all traces of this islet from the earth.
