Who's idea was it to stick a god in the anthem anyways? When I was a kid there was no "god keep our land."

I remember when they changed the anthem.... but when I googled to find the version I learned, it says the current version was adopted in 1968. :?

I thought it was a little late than that.

I'm sure it was later than that. 1986 would be a more likely answer. Why couldn't they just leave it alone? It was fine before.

I thought late 70s early 80s. And for the life of me, I can't remember the older version.

The original version was just "O, Canada" instead of "God keep our land."

Doesn't quite have the same ring to it, besides it kind of sounds like a skipping record "O, Canada, glorious and free, O, Canada we stand on gaurd for thee". I like the way it is now.

Anyways, I noticed someone said that the principal didn't base his decssion on religous reasons. If that wasn't the case why did he did do it?

"O Canada" was proclaimed Canada's national anthem on July 1, 1980, 100 years after it was first sung on June 24, 1880. The music was composed by Calixa Lavallée, a well-known composer. French lyrics to accompany the music were written by Sir Adolphe-Basile Routhier. Many English versions have appeared over the years. The anthem on which the official English lyrics are based was written in 1908 by Mr. Justice Robert Stanley Weir.
The official English version now includes changes recommended in 1968 by a Special Joint Committee of the Senate and House of Commons. The French lyrics remained unaltered.

The criticism of Weir's original version was that the words asked Canadians to "stand on guard" too many times without telling them exactly for what reason. As a result, two of the five "stand on guard's" and one "O Canada" were removed and replaced by "From far and wide" and "God keep our land". With these alterations, we now have a new national anthem.

The biggest part of why people are getting angry over this is because only a few students diddn't want to sing it and he bent over backwards and ruined the fun and patriotism for everybody else. If every school did that, than one day there won't even be a anthem singalong in schools. If every school bent over backward to a few individuals who protest it.

Secondly what sparked this outrage and anger even more is the current war, because we have a lot of soldiers dieing, etc most Canadians are feeling extra patriotic and the anthem respect and salutes the soldiers of old and new.

In my opinion, nothing is out of proportion. This arguement is completly acceptable except for the death threats.

This principal should have realized when or when not to do something like that. Only reason the other schools diddn't get flack or on the news was because when they did it there was no Canadian soldiers dieing and no extra patriotism from the majority of Canadians.

I however hope that this sparks a change and protest against the other schools that did the same. I mean, if kid's don't want to sing the anthem than that's there choice. However they belong to this country, they are Canadians even if they are immigrants and when it's played they should atleast stand in silence to respect it. Don't have to sing.

$1:
1967 - March 15. The special joint committee "unanimously recommends that the government be authorized to adopt forthwith the music for "O Canada" composed by Calixa Lavallée as the music of the National Anthem of Canada with the following notation added to the sheet music: With dignity, not too slowly.

"God Save The Queen" was found to be in the public domain as the Royal Anthem of Canada, but for "O Canada" the committee deemed it "essential to take such steps as necessary to appropriate the copyright to the music providing that it shall belong to Her Majesty in right of Canada for all time. This provision would also include that no other person shall be entitled to copyright in the music or any arrangements or adaptations thereof."

The committee recommended further study of the lyrics. It suggested keeping the original French version and using the Weir English version with minor changes - that is replacing two of the "Stand on guard" phrases with "From far and wide" and "God keep our land".

There was no trouble with the music copyright which had by now descended to Gordon V. Thompson. They were willing to sell for $1, but the heirs of Judge Weir objected to the changes in the original version. Since Judge Weir died in 1926, the Weir version would not come into public domain until 1976. There was some doubt that the Weir family had legal grounds for objection since Thompson's apparently held copyright on both music and English words. However the committee preferred to settle the matter amicably if at all possible. The Government acquired the rights from G.V. Thompson in 1970.

The version recommended by the committee:

" O Canada! our home and native land!
True patriot love in all thy sons command.
With glowing hearts we see thee rise,
The True North strong and free!
From far and wide, O Canada,
We stand on guard for thee.
God keep our land glorious and free!
O Canada, we stand on guard for thee.
O Canada, we stand on guard for thee."

50 to 100 schools per year. You don't say!

That makes you the expert!

Expertise has nothing to do with it. Familiarity with a large number of schools and their routines through experience makes generalizations possible.

First off there is a big difference between 50 and 100. Secondly you had not said anything where these schools were, Im sure you could find close to 100 schools in the Edmonton area. To say you are an expert but base your expertise on just the schools in the Edmonton area, is misleading. :|
