Why electric cars? Most people want to be less dependent on the grid NOT more...!!!!
With black outs and power losses getting more frequent, it's bad enough to lose your toaster or tv, yet alone have a car that won't start...

many industrial electric motors are rated for 100,000 hours of contimuous use...at highway speed that translates to over a million miles. can you imagine an auto industry where the average car goes 500,000 miles or more on the same engine?

It's not about 'the grid' it's about pollution.
An electric car concentrates emissions at a power plant, where they are easier to deal with, vs. 10,000 cars on the road.
It can also be charged by any source of electricity - wind, solar panels on your roof, or even your lemon and potato voltaic array.

Current vehicles have their own "Grid". They're called Gas Stations.

RUEZ RUEZ: Ripcat Ripcat: RUEZ RUEZ: mapleleafsnation mapleleafsnation: I see a lot of conservatives saying 'nobody wants that'.
What the heck?
Conservatives (not historically but now) defend a free market. But are they saying 'don't allow them to sell that'? I say nobody would want it either, but if they make it road worthy and it can keep up with the pace of traffic I have no problems with them selling it. I think it would be a better idea to develop a car that could satisfy all needs rather than one car for city driving and another for longer trips. Please name one car manufacturer that makes a car that satisfies all needs.... Right, there isn't one so why should this company be any different? GM. They make the Chevy Colorado and GMC Canyon. Four cylinder motor which is as good on fuel as my four cylinder car. You can get it in a crewcab so you can fit the whole family and it has a pickup box for cargo. See, not that hard.
See my previous post.

It's easier to get gas out of them when the power is on....
Wouldn't it be funny if all those blackouts happened just as you were driving to and from work so you could never fill up at the most convenient time. Meanwhile your neighbour just takes 5 seconds to plug his car in everynight and unplug every day.
And the money your neighbour saved on gasoline was used to rent a Hummer whenever he took the family camping for the weekend.

It would be the best thing to happen to Canadian Manufacturing since the Auto-Pact. Instead of making "American" cars, we'd be making Canadian cars.

True. Buick or one of the subsidiaries of the "Big 3" were once Canadian I believe. In light of the recent satellite purchase situation and ATI, ya, we seem to just build up successful Corps for foreigners to buy them. It is rather unfortunate, just another reason why we need a bigger population. We have the Per Capita Wealth, just need the numbers to make it mean something.
