lily lily: You're getting way off track, Brenda. Bringing up McDonalds and skiing and going for walks isn't relevant to the effects of smoking in a confined space.
Anyone who thinks that opening a window a crack or even all the way will rid the car of the smoke has never tossed something out the front window only to have it land in the backseat. Try puking out the window of a moving vehicle and see where it goes.
Not all the smoke goes outside, and some of what did will come right back in.
You never got my point Lily.
Are you seriously telling me that all that McDonalds kids are fed by their parents is good for their health? Risks of heart disease by eating too fat doesn't exist?

newfette newfette: and it just takes a few bad apples to spoil it for everyone.
And a bunch of bandwagon jumpers to push it along.

Of course it's not healthy.... but that's not the topic.
Oh? The health of the kids is not the topic?

Brenda Brenda: It is the parents choice to become parents.
What you are saying, is that if parents are smoking with kids, they are unfit parents. So we fine them. The poor cannot pay the fine, so they end up in jail, and the kids in the system.
The wealthy pay the fines, smoke some more in front of their kids, and nothing changes.
I never said smoking in front of kids is a good thing, I just don't think the government should butt in if they themselves will not take responsibility for selling the stuff (and collect the taxes) for it anyway. First of all if you are too poor to pay a fine but can smoke there is something wrong there. Secondly If you don't pay the fine they take it from you, I've never heard of someone going to jail for not paying a fine. Yes if parents are smoking in front of their children they are unfit. .

Well I guess it's a good thing this law wasn't in place 40 years ago or we'd all have been foster children.

They want to send a message that smoking in your car with a child is not acceptable.

Brenda Brenda: newfette newfette: Brenda Brenda: No, it isn't. Because driving drunk is a crime. You cannot compare drinking to smoking, that makes no sense at all. putting the life of a child at risk isn't illeagal?? Taking your child on a walk on a busy sidewalk, with the risk of getting hurt isn't illegal, is it? Taking your child skiing, with the risk of it falling and break something is not illegal, is it?
Devil's advocate to the extreme!
I think we have a consensus: Kill all the stupid people so that we don't legislate unnecessarily.
I'm in!

And the effects it has on their health, because that is why people who smoke in cars with kids are fined.

Doing a lot of things in front of your children is unacceptable. Do we need a law passed for each?
At what point will someone send the message that people need to use good old fashioned COMMON SENSE, and not need laws to make all of our decisions for us?

Bingo! You got it!
So... rather than passing legislation for every freakin' thing on the continent, let's TEACH our children common sense!
Brilliant, eh!

Yes, but it's about smoking in a car... a confined space. Bringing up fat food restaurants and skiing, etc is what's known as a strawman.
Of course you would say that I was responding to a post with that comment, btw, too bad you didn't quote that too...
I like your typo though

Well if the strawman keeps stuffing his face with McDonald's he's gonna have some serious health problems, likely teach his children the same bad habits (that same innocent child who has no choice), and we'll be sitting here with generations of obese people who have no common sense, therefore, no way to help themselves and we'll be paying astronomical health care premiums to keep them alive.....
Oh hang on.... that's already happening.
Huh... yep. Gonna need another law made.

I guess when it get's to the point of laws being passed it's because common sense just wasn't working. To be honest I didn't really think there was a bad enough problem that it needed a law, but I also can't understand anyone being against that law.
