I read a sci-fi book a lot of years ago about the drama of some guy inventing a new kind of energy that would be free to everyone and the story was about the myriad interests trying to kill him before he could make the secret public.

It may have been fiction but it hewed a close line to the truth.

It'll happen one day, just not for our generation. Probably not even for the next three or four generations either. But definitely someday, most likely in a mix of some kind of H2O engine, hyper-efficient solar, geothermal, and microwave collector nets in high orbit transmitting power down to stations on the planet's surface. Science never sleeps, and that's a good thing. There's still a lot of hurdles to jump over yet, with the worst one being the out of control & rapacious greed that's currently in such vogue. As the song goes, oh children you've still got a lot to fucking learn, and the only path to heaven is via hell. This is the price we all must pay for our laziness in letting the very worst among us become the most powerful.
