My grand uncle's(married to my maternal grandfather's sister) mother and father were locked away in an interment camp as children with their parents and relatives. They had come over from Franz Josef land. My uncle insisted they were Austrians, not 'godbedammit bohunks', whenever he was called Ukrainian....his brother had a different opinion.

Despite the way his family had been treated, he volunteered in WWII and worked partially as a translator/infantryman as he was fluent in English, German and Ukrainian....but you couldn't call him one.

What was racist?
Here in Canada, Germans and Italians (and some others) were interred if they thought they were a threat. ALL Japanese Canadians were interred.
