Wow. Apparently Trudeau has super powers. Despite not even being sworn in yet as Prime Minister much less tabling and passing any legislation, he's already turned us in the Socialist Republic of Canada. ....

I never did. That's just the nature of government works in Canada.

Just remember 24 sussex isn't just a residence but also a workplace. Not only does the PM and family need to be secure from stalkers etc but the location needs to be secure from espionage. The only logical explanation is an official residence under the control and care of the Canadian government.

I wonder if I've actually ever said that. Maybe.

Either way, I'm just saying you need not panic, socialism wasn't even in the contest.

Not yet but there could be a delayed reaction from the true believers. As we speak roman is rallying the workers down at the Orange Julius kiosk. They're going to spit into every third smoothie until their demands are met. 8O

Aren't trade unions for workers? Think we'll be safe from Ice Owl, as that sounds too much like work for him.

Justin Trudeau will move into Rideau Cottage, not 24 Sussex

PM's official residence in need of millions of dollars in repairs

CBC News Posted: Oct 26, 2015 2:02 PM ET Last Updated: Oct 26, 2015 2:37 PM ET

Prime minister-designate Justin Trudeau and his family will not be moving into 24 Sussex Drive any time soon, the Liberal Party said in a statement.

Instead, the incoming prime minister will take up residence at the Rideau Cottage, located just up the street.

"Justin Trudeau, his wife, Sophie Grégoire-Trudeau, and their three children will be immediately relocating to Rideau Cottage, part of the Rideau Hall grounds in the National Capital Region," reads the news release.

"Mr. Trudeau and his family will reside at Rideau Cottage until further notice," it said.

The notice said the prime minister-designate will make decisions about 24 Sussex Drive after he has been "fully briefed" by officials.

24 Sussex Drive in Ottawa is the prime minister's official residence, but is in need of millions of dollars in repairs. Rideau Cottage sits adjacent to Rideau Hall at 1 Sussex Dr.

The 22-room Rideau Cottage was constructed in 1867 and is designated as a "recognized" heritage building by the Federal Heritage Building Review Office.

Measuring 932 square metres, it has traditionally served as the residence of the secretary to the Governor General.

"Rideau Cottage" sounds good. I suppose I should put positive spin on this. But that's a cottage? It's 22 rooms, and way bigger than my house. And he kicked out the guy who was living there. The article says traditionally that's the residence of the secretary to the Governor General. I wonder where he'll go? Probably has to find his own home now.

So the government spent $400,000 just renovating the "cottage" in 1999/2000. And during Harper's administration, the government estimated $10 million to renovate 24 Sussex. I keep thinking "How do I get a piece of that?" I just helped a neighbour this afternoon move the scaffold for his house. I'm sure I could do all the work for much less than $2 million. I'm an unemployed computer software developer, struggling to make ends meet with a little home business doing computer repair.

I'm a technical nerd, so I have a few suggestions. Use mineral wool insulation, because it's just as warm as fibreglass, but mineral wool is entirely non-flammable. A Canadian company makes it: Roxul, product name Comfort Batt. And use copper pipes for water with silver solder so they don't obsess about lead. But for sewage plumbing, use stainless steel grade 401 pipes. That's the cheapest grade of stainless steel, and you can buy plumbing pipes made of that. It will develop a patina, but won't rust. And metal pipes are entirely non-flammable. Walls of a house that age would be plaster/latte. Drywall is soft and easily damaged, they should use real plaster. But use real plaster, not polyurethane, because real plaster is non-flammable. And use fibreglass tape for seams in the plaster, not paper. Again, fibreglass is non-flammable. You could build walls with drywall that has fibreglass felt as facing instead of paper, because again it's non-flammable. And that grade of drywall is resistant to mildew, because it has no paper. And that drywall has fibreglass fibres embedded in the gypsum, allowing it to stand one hour in a raging house fire. It's a fire wall. And the glass fibres add strength to hold nails. You could open the walls to install insulation and vapour barrier, then close them with drywall. Then apply a skim coat of plaster, to give it strength. Or if they want really strong walls, use mineral fibre board with a skim coat of plaster. Again, that's non-flammable. And use Teflon insulated electrical wiring, because it's non-flammable and can withstand a lot of heat. If you make enough of the house non-flammable, then you don't need a sprinkler system. And sprinklers would cause water damage. Hire me!

On the upside it appears that Justin won't need much in the way of furniture since he likes to sit on carpets with his friends.
