Had to happen sooner or later. Not a good way to calm things down or have the Sunnis stop supporting IS.

Time to give the Kurds their own state. They seem to be the only civilized actors in the region, going out of their way to help Christians and Yazidis. Quit trying to prop up the corruption in Baghdad. Give the Kurds the heavy weapons they need, give them advisors to train them. Give them recognition.

The only fly in the ointment is that the Syrian Kurds and Iraqi Kurds aren't getting along. One of them favors co-operating with Turkey, the other side doesn't. So at some point they could have their own little dustup. And of course the Kurds in Turkey might start acting up if the Kurds in Iraq have their own country.

Someone please correct me if I error in any way in the following recollection:

1. After the assassination of Osama Bin Laden in Abbatobad Pakistan, a then, unprecedented thing happened. The white house leaked the name of the Seal team that carried out the job as Seal Team 6. This violated nearly every protocol of the military and of the oval office, as I understand it. Sometime not too long after the assassination, the entire seal team was on one old helicopter in Afghanistan for some reason, and it was shot down, and they all died.

Now I may have some of that wrong, but that is how I remembered it.

Flash forward to this week. James Foley was beheaded and the Obama admin once again leaked that they had a special op team in for the rescue but it failed. Enough details were given so that the Islamic State or any other enemy of the US will now know enough to never have to worry about the US rescuing a hostage from them.

Anyone else see a pattern here?
