OnTheIce OnTheIce: fifeboy fifeboy: OnTheIce OnTheIce: Falling literacy rates and math scores. That's what we've got in Canada.
Glad those high salaries, strikes and 'job action' are making education that much better. http://www.conferenceboard.ca/hcp/details/education.aspxThanks for proving my point. Actually, I don't think he did. If you expand the image you chose, it shows most other nations in the survey have falling literacy and math scores when compared to the past, so it all that shows it that Canada is largely following the trend. I think this image is a better representation, as it shows our ranking relative to others in the survey in each category. If you notice, Canada has an 'A' or 'B' ranking in 13 out of 20 categories. As the report notes; $1: Canada's strength is in delivering a high-quality education with comparatively modest spending to people between the ages of 5 and 19. So, it sounds that Fife was correct - we do get what we pay for, which as are most things with Canada unfortunately, is as little as possible and hoping for the best.

Brenda Brenda: Maybe you had the luxury to take 3 months off in summer, but I do not. Most do not. Bosses do not usually like that idea and neither do land lords or clients/customers. We get 10 or 15 days off. Per year.
Teachers also don't get paid to mark papers at night, go to school in the evening to xerox, put out the yearbook, coach volleyball, run the chess club, tutor students , etc, etc , etc . They just do it. Withdrawing these voluntary services is just a way to get your attention . If, as Icy suggests, these services are done by parents, see how it goes. My experience with parent volunteers is that a few will do almost everything, working their asses off until they burn out. Might work though. As I said, you get what you pay for. I remember reading someplace (anecdotal report only) that one of the reasons the US has such low math scores is that math teachers are wooed away by industry with better pay. You get what you pay for!

You get what you pay for! Kids mark their own papers (or each others), above average students tutor students constantly, various clubs are volunteered by parents etc etc etc. Teachers are not holier than thou, and when they pull shit like this AGAIN, people like me get a little pissed off. So do various teachers in my kids' school, who WANT to teach their students, but are not allowed to now. I guess we should pay teachers millions, eh? Because that would guarantee good teachers. BULLSHIT. There are a LOT of teachers who simply do not care, who are there for the pay check (you know, every one needs one) and leave the kids struggle. Who do not give a flying fuck about above average kids and do not understand they need a bit extra challenge or they will drop out young.

This is all very deja vu. After 10 years, full time, right in the heart of it all, I'm SO glad I'm officially done with the public school system. As heated as everyone gets, there's one thing to remember - this is going to happen again in 3-4 years, the same arguments are going to come up, and the same debates will take place. Might as well just pray it's over soon and roll with it.

I'm sure the government just needs to pas legislation to do it. If there are not enough teachers to go around, well sixty students per class should work, or bring in TFW to fill the gaps. That should work.

So basically people who work are to busy to deal and or help with their kids education. Odd I worked 40hrs a week while raising my kids and spent time every week with them on their studies. I made sure they read during the summer and worked on math problems so they would not "forget" how to do what they learned the previous school year.
Seems many people just want to disregard what a teach makes and say ohhh they make a ton of money. BS I grew up as a teachers kid I know they don't make squat.
But to quote Brenda "FUCK YOU, TEACHERS"

What you need to understand is, parents like you (and me, and a few people on this thread), make up approximately 3% of the parents of students of today. The other 97% don't give a flying flute what their kids do all day. They don't have a clue what their kids learn, don't want to know, they simply want free daycare and for someone else to take full responsibility for their children, so they have someone to hold accountable when little Johnny/Janie turns out to be a drop out/deadbeat/lazy assed loser. And this IS honest, first hand observation from several different schools. It makes it hell for "real" parents.

But to quote Brenda "FUCK YOU, TEACHERS" For not making sure kids know whether they passed their grade, that they worked their asses off for? YES, definitely, FUCK YOU, TEACHERS.

Teachers haven't given out report cards half the year, which is a complete semester. The school district employees now have to do the work of the teachers. I must say that I am super happy with our Superintendent of the School District. He is awesome and kept us all informed without stating any opinion.

There are some people who are determined to $hit on teachers, no matter what. I get that too.
Have at it. I'm not likely to change those minds. There's too much other baggage to deal with in trying to do so.

I support the teachers--big surprise. It's a big hassle for a couple if weeks, but thge way I look at it, I'm taking a bit of unscheduled vacation time with the kids. I know a few teachers and they aren't driving Porsches around. Plus, the courts have ruled that this government in BC has negotiated in bad faith. Not that I believe much of what either group says.
