Texas is, to most education scholars, the textbook example of how not to provide public education. It's the laughing stock of all education systems. Not that that has much to do with the issue of school security, per se, but citing Texas as an example of the right way of doing anything education-wise is a non-starter for with anyone who understands education and how to effectively deliver it.

Actually, I was thinking that more people might opt for that.

High Schools in Canada already have that it's called a resource officer and while the chances are hr could be at the right place at the right time is anyone's guess but his presence alone should be enough of a deterrent to a potential gun man.

Is that "all high schools, some high schools, a few high schools or a high school?" And what is the job of the resource officer? Is he in the school all the time, part time, there to chat up the students or there to prevent some wacked out mother killer from shooting up a classroom?

In the bigger high schools there was a resource officer present, in my high school he was there full time dressed in his uniform and armed. Of course when i was in high school the idea of someone coming in guns blazing was unthinkable and today it's a different ball game.

In the Upper Grand/Wellington Catholic DSB, there are 7 resource officers (two OPP, one Orangeville City cop and four City of Guelph officers) to cover the 14 highschools; one covers the 3 northern schools, one covers the 2 eastern schools, one covers the two Orangeville schools and the other 4 cover the 7 Guelph highschools. Their job is more about dealing with criminals who happen to be in highschool than to act as any sort of in-school security. They're usually only in a school if a crime's happened or they're looking to speak to a particular student about something. They have other duties and only a small portion of their week is spent in the schools. They may not even visit a particular school for more than a few minutes per month. Since they park their cruisers right in front of the schools, everyone knows when they are and when they aren't around. Not much of a deterrent, I wouldn't think.

That's a good thing. Not needing police officers in a school is a positive in my opinion.

Just a few points here about Isreal vs other countries. Isreal has an armed population because they live, constantly, in a state of war. Does not matter which side you support, it's still a state of war. Regarding Switzerland and the constant comparison to the U.S., it appears that the Swiss are armed to defend themselves against foreign invasion and it looks like Americans are armed to defend themselves against each other. One situation is good, another not so much.

Regarding the U.K. No need to discuss the ups and downs of it's murder rate after the shootings in Scotland. Their levels are still much lower and unless they approach American levels, there is no comparison.

Switzerland has tightened up its gun laws considerably. And, they are an example of what the phrase "well regulated militia" really means. And also, obviously, they are a state of adults, who don't try to kill each other at every opportunity. The can have lax gun laws because they are responsible people. They don't create the sort of social conditions that give rise to all this violence.

What would those "social conditions" be?

Taxes are big government interventions here. Interesting what principles held so dear the gun proponents seem to be willing to part with though.

Just because a person is trained how to shoot doesn't mean a person is prepared to take a human life. Is there a training program that will prepare a teacher to shoot one of their students who is brandishing a gun?

Nor is one trained to recognize that the gun pulled in grade 9 math is really a toy and the kid is just being a jerk. Of course, there could be strip searches of each student as they come into the school and random searches throughout the day. That should go over great with parents. And don't forget the teachers, one of them could go berserkers during science and start blasting away at the little brats.
