What I'm hoping for is a viable alternative with the Liberals by the next election.

And young Justin aint it. More time in the wilderness if the Liberals select him as their next leader.

Too early to tell really. If fortunes do change for the Liberals and Conservatives, I suspect that it will happen fairly quickly.

The early reading on Justin shows he has the depth of a soap dish. I honestly hope the Liberals run a proper leadership campaign and don't just anoint Justin. We need another strong party left of centre and I really don't want it to be the NDP! 8O

They had strong contenders, I thought, with Stpahne Dion and with Michael Ignatieff. Two very smart policy wonks who had been successful in past endeavours. Neither succeeded. I don't think either had much of a chance, given the rapid-attack politics of the Conservatives combined with the fact that Canadians thought they had to, as you say, "spend more time in the wilderness."

Trudeau's feet of clay will reveaql themselves soon enough. No human can live up to the expectations some have of him, to lead the Liberals from the wilderness to the Promised Land.

Dions biggest fault was his "green shift" tax, and the fact that he was a cabinet member during Chreteins years where his biggest push for climate change politics was naming his dog Kyoto. Probably a nice guy but not one I would want to see represent Canada on a world stage. He just looked plain weak.

I admit I was initially fearful of Iggy but he proved to alienate people even more than the PM. Plus the conservatives got quite a bit of mileage out of the "Just visiting" campaign, which funny enough turned out true as he's back teaching in the US.

Agreed.

They need a smart leader, not a pretty boy.

I think far too many people are looking too much at him being his fathers son. Too many Liberals think he's a messiah and too many conservatives think the national energy program will be re-introduced. Maybe he should just change his name and we can actually concentrate on whether he's fluff or substance.

I put Harper in the good-leader/iffy-charisma category. Mulclair is all fur coat and no knickers.

Hmmm...it appears you and I have very different opinions on what constitutes good leadership.

I agree with EB, Harper is the best LEADER we've had in years.

If I had a CO that ran his ship with the same iron grip as Harper - a guy who regular stifles his staff and micro manages like he does, I wouldn't be labeling him as the best leader in years.

I doubt Trudeau Jr's as dumb as some people are assuming. A gaffe here or there really means nothing in the great scheme of things.

As for the political wilderness part, I doubt the Libs will be forming the next government. I'd be happy though if they were able to dislodge the nutbars from the NDP as the official opposition.

If Justin becomes PM he will just be just-in office and use a plethora of advisers.

I'd submit that's an emotive subjective response more than a factual objective one.

Same as any other PM of the last forty years then. The Cabinet is now less and less important in terms of policy development and enforcement than the circle of advisors and appointees in the PMO now are.

I think the Liberals take the next election. And I bet the Conservatives will lose it more than the Libs will win it. Like they are losing a lot of support in BC right now.

That's the point. If he has good advisers, that, along with his polished personality will persuade people to vote for the Libs.

Agreed. Trudeau taking the leadership and barring any massive gaffs...a Lib minority at the very least. CPC is losing steam out here as you say and I'd vote Lib ten times over before the federal NDP

I'm taking the name out of it. But I am taking that into the equation. There's no option. That said, I wasn't here when Trudeau was in.

I got here when they disbanded the Airborne. That got my attention, as did the EH101 debacle and news shots of Army guys driving the bloody Iltis-thingies in Bosnia.

I don’t have the same loathing of Trudeau that many right-of-centre Canadians have of my age bracket. I just don’t think this guy has much about him. He looks even more shallow than the average politician.

I don’t know if he can pull it off for long enough to get the Libs in.

I’m thinking not.

The CPC has not been a boon to the military by a long shot either.
