Without taking up too much space let me say that when I see people standing on the corner with a sign asking for help there are times that I do give the person something. But if I see them smoking a cigarette, talking on a cell phone, or if they have a vehicle parked nearby then they get nothing.
I almost never give, unless they really look down and out. But you can be off - there was a young woman standing outside a Wendy's asking for food. I reflexively said no, but then gave her my leftover fries and soft drink as I was leaving. She was so grateful I went right back in and bought her a meal. Other times I've given some guy a hamburger and they've just thrown it away. I have no problem giving somebody food if they're hungry, but I don't want to support drug use.
