To keep a dog in a city you actually have to get a dog license. To buy and own a firearm you still have to get a firearms license.

Broken analogy. You don't get licensed to own a dog. You register the dog.

You buy a dog license, look it up. You're the one that brought up the comparison, of which there really isn't one. You have to take a federal safety course and pass it to purchase a firearm, as well as pass a criminal check. You purchase a dog license to help pay for city services pertaining to dogs, and so they can contact you when fido escapes. This is actually a stupid comparison, much like the one about having to register a car. I've actually owned cars that weren't registerd, and I didn't go to jail. It's not against the law, just don't try driving it on a public road.

It is not a stupid comparison. If you own two dogs, you register both of them. It is not unreasonable to require a registry of lethal firearms. It is unreasonable to differentiate between short guns and long guns when a long gun can become a short gun using a hacksaw. You have to register your dog for safety reasons, same as your gun.

lol well, never heard of it and neither have the people I know. You put a necklace and a tag on it to get it back if it's lost and you keep it on a leash when walking it. But, anyway, those are only municipal rules. It's not a criminal offence. That was the point. A dog is a living animal by its own. A firearm is not. It's comparing apple and orange, as you should have realized.

If you train a dog to attack someone on the street, the dog will get seized and you will be arrested. That's a criminal offence. It's extremely uncommon and I really don't think that's why you *have* to *register* your dog.

yeah but you don't goto jail if you don't register your dog. The SWAT team won't kick in your door at 2am because you failed to put a little tag on your dog's collar. The same can't be said about an unregistered firearm.

You can't compare civil and CRIMINAL law, they are different beasts.
