Speaking of ad hominem attacks

If the troops idolize Don Cherry, then they're not as bright as we're always told Canadian soldiers are.

Yes, but the fact they're soldiers is totally irrelevant. I think less of anybody who idolizes Cherry, doesn't matter what they do for a living.

But you did pause... two... three... to make a point of focusing on the troops.

Backpeddle or stand your ground like a man, Andy.

Woman: Denny, there's some lovely filth down here!
[Noticing Arthur] Oh! How d'you do?

Arthur: How do you do, good lady. I am Arthur, King of the Britons. Whose castle is that?

Woman: King of the who?

Arthur: The Britons.

Woman: Who are the Britons?

Arthur: Well we all are... We are all Britons... And I am your king.

Woman: I didn't know we had a king... I thought we were an autonomous collective.

Dennis: You're foolin' yourself. We're livin' in a dictatorship! A self-perpetuating autocracy in which the working classes...

Never a good idea. If Cherry is your idol you need to get out more.

You mean like travelling to Afghanistan to support our troops like Don? That's getting out more alright.

Who brought up the troops?

Love him or hate him...

But you have to admit that Don sure does get people talking. Seems whenever there is a story about him it generates conversation both pro and con, as can be seen in cka...

He has said things that have really annoyed me but has also made me laugh like hell, sometimes because he hits the nail on the head and other times because he is so far off that you can only laugh about it.

He has his opinions, and stands by them, and though I certainly don't always agree with him I respect that he will speak his mind knowing that others will trash him for it. Not everyone can do this. There aren't a whole lot of "colourful" characters out there like him.

While I don't give him the props you do, I see your point Strutz. I don't care what he says about hockey. But his style of "patriotism" scares the hell out of me - as the article says, unquestioning. And I think it's sad to make show business out of it. And even for hockey - the players are adults and can make their own decisions. But I think Cherry's loudmouth pronouncements are part of what keep hockey so dangerous.

If Don Cherry or anything he says actually "scares" you then you need to make a big-time change to your life and to the way you're living it. Seriously, that's about the wussiest thing I've ever seen anyone say on any message board. :|

Oh, well, I'm a leftie, I can't help it. Not like the brawny righty tighty, rah rah military, eye protection is for pansies guys.

I really don't want to live in the US, and Cherry seems to embody a lot of what I see down there.

EyeBrock EyeBrock:
Anybody who takes time out to visit the troops on the front line to spread a bit of cheer is ok by me.

The likes of Mercer and Cherry show that our TV personalities actually have some admirable qualities. Most refreshing.

It's easy to sneer at our guys in uniform like the Star and other media orgs do regularly.

Getting of your arse as a ‘star’ and taking a Herk or a C17 into an airfield that takes mortar rounds daily, just to visit fellow Canadians away from home for 6 months is something to recognise in a positive way.

The authors of this report hark back to a day when the CF was held in popular disdain. Fuck 'em.

Well said Eyebrock. As one who has been visited in Khandahar by the likes of Don Cherry, Rick Mercer, Adam Gregory, etc etc, I can tell you that we truely appreciate the gratitude these folks give us when they visit. You wouldnt believe how much they boost morale. You dont have to like Don Cherry but you should at least respect that he takes the time to show the soldiers how he feels. He uses his time on his show to pay respects to our causualties as well as other professions such as firefighters, police etc. Goes along way to instilling pride in being a canadian soldier.

I doubt there's one troop or sailor out there that really gives too much of a fuck what you think, Andy.

Count me in as one who really doesn't give a f.. what Andy thinks.

Love it - saw an episode of Rick Mercer Report where Cherry was the guest.

It was great, Don and Rick went to Fabricland to buy material to turn into a suit. Wouldn't you know it, Don picked out curtain fabric for Rick's suit (as he had for himself in the past) and took it to a tailor who made a riotously loud suit for Rick. Very funny episode!

This alone is more than any media personallity in this country has done since the outset of the war.
Like him/Hate him, believe him or not, you at least have to respect the gestures he's made to those who have given their very lives for this country

i like ron and don and rex and george and rick. ...without them, and the playoffs, i'd never watch the cbc.

and i like that ol' don pays so much respect to our men and women in the forces. they have a lot more courage and discipline than myself and i appreciate that don thanks them on behalf of us all.
