The government has no business regulating the content of the news. If you don't like what's being said or if you determine it's false then change the channel or read a different newspaper.

Actually, the government has a responsibility (the CRTC) to regulate false news, etc.

It doesn't affect opinion however.

'Broadcast standards' will be affected by Fox North? Really?

I'm just surprised that the lying bunch of agenda-driven shits that make up our mainstream media have the cheek to say we have 'standards'.

What a bunch of old bollocks.

PMO was directly involved in picking controversial CRTC vice-president
$1:
The Harper government has confirmed that the Prime Minister's Office was involved directly in the nomination process that led to the controversial appointment of criminal lawyer Tom Pentefountas as vice-president of the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission

Pentefountas is a former candidate and president of the provincial Action democratique du Quebec, a party with strong ties to Tory senator Leo Housakos and Harper's top spokesman Dimitri Soudas. Pentefountas' new position as vice-president-broadcasting of the federal broadcast regulator comes with a salary ranging from $190,400 to $224,000.

"It's quite clear to me, from reviewing all the information I can find about (Pentefountas), that though he may be a sharp, intelligent, well-educated lawyer, that there's nothing in his career that would give him the skills, knowledge, background experience to go into the CRTC as a vice-chair of broadcasting," said Ian Morrison

Governments should not be regulating the content of the news. Period.

The people can do that quite nicely all on ther own.

Like yours does with foul language & nudity?

I watched Showgirls on WTBS superstation last week. It was 10 minutes long and featured Elizabeth Berkely driving into Las Vegas and then driving out of Las Vegas with a commercial for checkers in between. :P

48 hours to save Canadian journalism

$1:
In 48 hours, public protections against false news coverage could be destroyed. The CRTC may pass a huge loophole to the "fair and balanced" rule that currently prevents media from outright lying to the public.

Canada's broadcast journalism standards are an impediment to the new "Fox News North" (Sun TV) network being set up by Prime Minister Harper's cronies, which promises to mimic Fox News -- the poisonous US propaganda network. The CRTC rule change, which allows false news to be blasted across Canadian airwaves, comes just as SunTV is about to launch. We can stop this -- last year, we prevented Harper cronies from pressing the CRTC to fund "Fox News North" with public money. Now, we have just two days to raise another national outcry to save the standards of Canadian journalism, and our democracy. Sign the petition, and then tell everyone about this campaign

48,279 have signed the petition, and counting....

Fail

That's a nice ideal but that's the not the reality.
Not everyone is searching for their news and read the sources. The example here in Quebec is amazing. I'm quite sure if the news anchor at the 18pm show says that Antarctica is not a real continent, 82% of the person listening will believe it.

No, no adult would seriously use that as a genuine argument. However in this case that's really all the tin foil hatters deserve.
