At any rate, Riel should be recognized for his heroism. He was controversial and fought for the rights of his people. MacDonald had second thoughts about hanging him, but was too late. I have read several books about Riel and I have listened to both sides of the argument.
In my opinion he is a hero and a founding father and should be given his place on Parliament Hill.
Whether anyone wants to think of him as a hero or not is beside the point, I think. He is an important part of Canadian history, regardless of whether anyone thinks he was doing right or wrong. There are others in our history who also do not always have such a glamorous story to tell, but are famously recognised and celebrated just the same. Should we strip Tommy Douglas of his recognition for creating public health care because he supported eugenics? Eugenics is a terrible idea, proven to be wrongheaded by the massacres of the early 20th century, and it was a very popular idea back then.. but at least we don't have to pay $400 for a cast and crutches if we break a leg!
